Testing the new Community feature on Steemit.

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

This morning I got to play around with the new Community feature.

I recorded the session.

Impressed with:

#1. Anyone can make a community for 3 STEEM. Longterm communities will love this but I can also see the use case for short term communities (to organize an event for instance).

#2. Communities can be moderated.

#3. Whatever you post in a community is not posted on your blog. (very handy).

#4. Content Discovery is a lot easier.

Questions:

#1 What is this?

#2. When a mod mutes a post in a community it's not visible to anyone in that community. Is it possible to mute users for the entire community?

#3. When a post is downvoted (outside the community) it's still visible within the community. Can only mods mute a post?

I downvoted this post on steemit.com. It's grayed out.

On the community site the same post lost rep. But the post is still visible.

#4 Can an SMT be used inside a community when they come out?

#5 I can post in a community without joining the community? is that normal? (it's called guest account).

#6 When I mute a post I have to give a reason. Where can I find these reasons?

#7 Can I make a community where I have to approve members first before they can post in my community?

Congratulations @exyle! Your post was mentioned in the Steem Hit Parade in the following categories:

    • Upvotes - Ranked 10 with 802 upvotes
    • Pending payout - Ranked 2 with $ 45,05
  • @sepracore(64)· 2470d

This might already be in the comments but your blog post likely didn’t work because you can only post one blog every 5 minutes I believe and you had just posted your community post 2 minutes before you tried your blog post. If you retry it now I bet it would work.

    Hi, @exyle!

You just got a 13.55% upvote from SteemPlus! To get higher upvotes, earn more SteemPlus Points (SPP). On your Steemit wallet, check your SPP balance and click on "How to earn SPP?" to find out all the ways to earn. If you're not using SteemPlus yet, please check our last posts in here to see the many ways in which SteemPlus can improve your Steem experience on Steemit and Busy.

I'm glad you're doing some content and helping people understand the possibilities of communities.

If you have a wish list for communities interface I'd love to hear about it.... steempeak.com is working our testing UI.

Wow, this looks a lot like subreddits, look at that sidebar! 🤣 But this is really exciting because Steemit from the beginning was "sold" as a reddit alternative, but has never really been similar enough to be a "reddit killer". This is definitely a step in the right direction though, can't wait until it is live!

  • @marki99(62)· 2470d

The reason it was not posting the blogpost is because you chose community at the top and not blogpost :)

  • @yousafharoonkhan(77)· 2470d

it is my first comment on 3speak, really helpful video thanks

What happens if a couple of whales create ,,Let's rape the reward pool community.''?

  • @cardboard(65)· 2470d

What's the URL of steemit beta site?:) Also, we still can't add favorite tags on the menu on the left?:(

  • @raycoms(71)· 2470d

Are these communities on the main-net already, so, can community names be claimed already?

And, what is the link for the beta again? =D

  • @bozz(83)· 2470d

Those are some great questions! I think there is going to be a bit of a learning curve for all of us before we are fully comfortable with all of this community stuff. It is going to be exciting when it is fully up and running though!

  • @gadrian(76)· 2470d

Thanks for showing us the beta communities in more details. :)

I've seen you were wondering at some point during the video why your vote doesn't show up, or why you have to refresh to see the post. I believe this is because of hivemind, a fast level 2 layer, but as far as I understand it, when blockchain operations are involved, there will occasionally be a little delay before the hivemind code picks up on the changes (including votes, new posts etc.).

I'd like to give my two cents on a few of your questions. But before I do, I have a question of my own.

I'm not clear at this point about this aspect: Is joining a community treated as a subscription (so a decision of the would-be subscriber)? Will moderating the community only be done through muting?

And now regarding some of your questions.

#2. When a mod mutes a post in a community it's not visible to anyone in that community. Is it possible to mute users for the entire community?

I may have missed this, can you see the posts from a community if you are not a member? If so, muting a user doesn't seem necessary. If this is possible, you just remove him/her from the community. He/she will continue to see content, but won't be able to post (or shouldn't, considering your last question).

#3. When a post is downvoted (outside the community) it's still visible within the community. Can only mods mute a post?

This makes sense to me, partially. I would either leave to the mods to mute a post or to the members of the community. Outsiders of the community shouldn't have any say about the content inside the community, regardless of their SP at the platform level.

If the post is resteemed on a personal blog, yes, then the general rules should apply and the post should be able to be muted by anyone.

#6 When I mute a post I have to give a reason. Where can I find these reasons?

I believe this is a sentence or something to tell the member (and possibly the community if it's displayed in the open) why was the post muted. Should be a reason regarding the violation of the rules of the community or common sense or the law, depending how is the community set up and the level of indulgence for various types of abuse mods have.

#7 Can I make a community where I have to approve members first before they can post in my community?

I've seen your proof this can happen. YES, I believe the community should be closed for posting, to members only. Maybe with an option to make it open. But then, what would be the difference between a member and a non-member posting?

Anyway, I'm sure details are still being worked on. And feedback like yours will be appreciated.
