Easy and short hike to a quite unique waterfall.

Leichte und kurze Wanderung zu einem einzigartigen Wasserfall.

A few days ago I visited a really beautiful and quite unique waterfall in Slovenia, and today I want to describe the way to the Kozjak Waterfall.

Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich einen wirklich schönen und ziemlich einzigartigen Wasserfall in Slowenien besucht, und den Weg zum Kozjak Wasserfall möchte ich heute beschreiben.

Coming from Bovec in the north, turn quite at the beginning of Kobarid left in the direction of Drežnica and then follow the road until you reach the Napoleon Bridge. Immediately after the bridge turn left and after a few hundred meters there is a gravel parking lot on the right. About 100 meters further on, you can turn left and find a larger gravel parking lot, which is right at the beginning of the trail to the waterfall. There is also a parking machine, which unfortunately did not work for me.
Therefore, unfortunately I could not pay for parking ;)

Von Norden, aus Richtung Bovec kommend, biegt man ziemlich am Anfang von Kobarid nach links in Richtung Drežnica ein und fährt dann im Straßenverlauf bis man zur Napoleonbrücke kommt. Gleich nach der Brücke biegt man links ab und nach ein paar hundert Metern ist rechts ein Schotterparkplatz. Ungefähr 100 Meter weiter kann man nach links abbiegen und findet dort einen größeren Schotterparkplatz, welcher direkt am Anfang des Wanderweges liegt. Dort gibt es auch einen Parkautomaten, welcher bei mir leider nicht funktioniert hat.
Daher konnte ich leider nicht fürs Parken bezahlen ;)

From the parking lot you walk first on a narrow dirt road between meadows to the north, which later runs comfortably right above the Soča, until you come to a wooden suspension bridge. You should definitely walk on it, because you get a nice view of the emerald green Soča river, and maybe you can even watch kayakers.

Vom Parkplatz geht es zu Fuß zuerst auf einem schmalen Schotterweg zwischen Wiesen Richtung Norden, welcher später gemütlich rechts oberhalb der Soča verläuft, bis man zu einer hölzernen Hängebrücke gelangt. Über diese sollte man unbedingt gehen, weil man einen schönen Blick auf die smaragdgrüne Soča bekommt, und vielleicht auch Kajakfahrer beobachten kann.

The path to the waterfall, however, leads past the bridge to the right, because a few meters further the Kozjak brook flows into the Soča river. From then on, the trail runs above this stream. You can see the creek quite well from the trail, and there are some nice spots with smaller waterfalls, but because the slope goes down a few meters relatively steep, and it is relatively overgrown, I would advise against going down to the creek.

Der Weg zum Wasserfall führt aber an der Brücke vorbei nach rechts, weil wenige Meter weiter der Kozjak Bach in die Soča mündet. Von da an verläuft der Wanderweg etwas oberhalb dieses Baches. Man kann den Bach vom Weg aus gut sehen, und es gibt einige schöne Stellen mit kleineren Wasserfällen, aber weil es einige Meter relativ steil hinunter geht, und der Abhang auch relativ verwachsen ist, würde ich davon abraten, zum Bach hinunter zu steigen.

After a while you get to the small Kozjak waterfall Mali Kozjak, which is 8 meters high and directly under a stone bridge over which the path leads. There are several well-trodden paths that allow you to get closer to the waterfall.

Nach einer Weile kommt man zum kleinen Kozjak Wasserfall Mali Kozjak, der 8 Meter hoch und direkt unter einer Steinbrücke ist, über welche der Weg führt. Es gibt mehrere ausgetretene Pfade, über die man näher an den Wasserfall herankommt.

Fairly flat, the path then continues along the stream until you reach a wooden hut, where you have to pay the entrance fee (EUR 4.00 per adult). I think the price is worth it, so that they can keep the paths clean and maintain the wooden pathways and bridges.

Ziemlich flach geht es dann neben dem Bach weiter, bis man an eine Holzhütte kommt, an welcher der Eintritt (EUR 4.00 pro Erwachsenem) kassiert wird. Ich denke, der Preis ist es wert, damit die Wege sauber und die Holzstege und Brücken instand gehalten werden können.

From there it is only a few meters to the first wooden bridge over the stream. Then another bridge follows and you have arrived at a wooden footbridge at the rock face, which ends in a small platform right in front of the Kozjak waterfall - Veliki Kozjak, which is 15 meters high.

Von da an sind es nur noch wenige Meter, bis man zur ersten Holzbrücke über den Bach kommt. Dann folgt eine weitere Brücke und schon ist man an einem Holzsteg an der Felswand angekommen, welcher in einer kleinen Plattform direkt vor dem Kozjak Wasserfall - Veliki Kozjak - endet. Der Wasserfall ist 15 Meter hoch.

I needed about half an hour from the parking lot to the waterfall.

Ich habe vom Parkplatz bis zum Wasserfall etwa eine halbe Stunde benötigt.

If you want to go directly to the waterfall, you have to go through the stream instead of on the wooden pathway, but in October I really did not want that :)

Wenn man direkt zum Wasserfall will, muss man statt auf dem Steg durch den Bach gehen, aber im Oktober wollte ich das eigentlich nicht :)

I've seen photos of people bathing in the waterfall too. This is not forbidden, but not desired and it is asked not to do it. You are in a nature reserve and should behave accordingly to preserve nature.

Ich habe Fotos gesehen, wo die Leute auch im Wasserfall baden. Dies ist nicht verboten, aber auch nicht erwünscht und es wird gebeten, es nicht zu machen. Man befindet sich ja auch in einem Naturschutzgebiet und sollte sich entsprechend verhalten, um die Natur zu schonen.

There are a total of 6 waterfalls in the Kozjak stream, but these two (Mali Kozjak and Veliki Kozjak) are the only ones open to visitors.

Es gibt insgesamt 6 Wasserfälle im Verlauf des Kozjak Baches, aber diese beiden (Mali Kozjak und Veliki Kozjak) sind die einzigen, welche für Besucher zugänglich sind.

Conclusion:
Beautiful waterfall and the location in a narrow canyon quite unique.
Easy and comfortable hike, in any case suitable for families.
In between, I would have liked to take small paths down to Kozjak brook to take pictures of the mossy little waterfalls and rapids, because I did not want to go down through the rather overgrown forest.

Fazit:
Wunderschöner Wasserfall und durch die Lage in einer engen Felsschlucht ziemlich einzigartig.
Einfache und gemütliche Wanderung, in jedem Fall für Familien geeignet.
Ich hätte mir zwischendurch kleine Pfade zum Kozjak Bach hinunter gewünscht, um Fotos der moosigen kleinen Wasserfälle und Stromschnellen machen zu können, denn durch den ziemlich verwachsenen Wald wollte ich nicht hinunter.
