Anger Management is directed by Peter Segal and stars Adam Sandler, Jack Nicholson, Marisa Tomei, Luis Guzmán, and Woody Harrison, among others. Plot
The movie begins by showing us a small neighborhood in Brooklyn, United States, in the 1970s, where we see a lonely boy drawing while intently watching a blonde girl with whom he is clearly in love. As he approaches her to speak to her, the neighborhood bully comes up to our protagonist, pulls down his underwear, and everyone around him laughs at him because everything is exposed. Decades later, we see our protagonist—now an adult with a job and a partner—trying to deal with his abusive boss, his self-esteem issues, and his difficulties showing affection in public.
Trama

Trailer & Review

Here's the trailer for the movie:

It had been a long time since I’d seen this great movie; I still remember the many times I watched it on TV at home when I was a kid, and I’ll definitely admit that it was one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. Well, it still is, since I recently watched it again and really loved it—I’d even go so far as to say it’s one of the best I’ve seen in the comedy genre. Without exaggerating, I’ll admit there are better Sandler movies that I’ll be reviewing soon, but Anger Management is special for a couple of reasons I’ll mention below.
One of those reasons is the unbeatable duo formed by Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson in this movie. While I admit that Sandler’s humor and talent for making us laugh are great (at least for me), what gives this movie that special touch is Nicholson’s unforgettable performance. You’re probably all familiar with this great actor, who has played many roles throughout his career that have gone down in history—such as the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman movie, for example.

Maybe some of you have seen Jack Nicholson in the occasional role in a horror, superhero, or drama movie. But I have to admit that I first became familiar with him as a kid because of his work on Anger Management. Yeah, what a way to get to know this actor, honestly. I say this because those of you who remember this movie will know what kind of character Nicholson plays. While Adam Sandler’s movies are famous for their funny, absurd, and unbearable characters, Nicholson’s character takes all of that to the nth degree, making him the perfect antagonist.
The premise of this movie is quite compelling, especially if you can relate to having anger issues. The protagonist, Dave Buznik, is a man who, at first glance, you wouldn’t suspect of having anger issues—at least not at first. However, his work life—trying to get a promotion while his boss makes him do all his work and always treats him badly—doesn’t help either. Especially not when your so-called best friend is hooking up with your beloved girlfriend, who used to date him a long time ago. His childhood trauma is another of his most notable issues, as he avoids any kind of public displays of affection with his partner.

While all of this may seem somewhat ordinary, let’s remember that our Dave has been enduring a tremendous amount of humiliation, ridicule, and problems since he was a child, without being able to vent all his anger and frustration. His meek and insecure behavior at the beginning is a sign of how dissatisfied he is with himself and his life. We see that Adam Sandler delivers an excellent performance thanks to the various ways he expresses this pent-up frustration and anger—through his gestures, manner of speaking, and certain involuntary movements.
Everything goes completely haywire just as our Dave boards the plane at the beginning of the movie. If we’ve seen the movie before, we can notice that from this moment on, there’s a sort of conspiracy against our Dave—who apparently does nothing wrong—and yet everyone around him conspires to accuse him of being an abuser and sentence him to anger management therapy. It’s here that a character who previously seemed like just another face in the crowd becomes the film’s main antagonist. Dr. Buddy Rydell makes his entrance as a very famous therapist.

However, from his very first group session with the other patients he treats, we notice something unusual about the way he goes about his work. Rather than trying to help Dave feel at ease with the group of outcasts and rather troubled people sitting around him, Dr. Buddy decides instead to provoke and deliberately anger our Dave—which he manages to do with no trouble at all. Something that caught my attention in what Buddy says in this part of the movie is his discussion of the different types of anger that exist. The idea that our protagonist has implosive anger (the exact opposite of explosive anger) is interesting.
At first, we’re led to believe that everything Buddy says about Dave is pure fabrication meant to annoy him, but as the minutes pass and through the various experimental—and rather questionable—sessions Buddy forces Dave to undergo, we see that Dave actually does have trouble controlling his anger. Of course, the joke here is that every session, every test, and every outing Dave has with Buddy is so absurd and unprofessional that it makes us wonder whether Buddy is really a therapist at all—or if he’s actually a complete fraud.

Another element that makes this movie quite entertaining is the complicated relationship between our protagonist, Dave, and Dr. Buddy. From the very beginning, we notice that Dr. Buddy’s goal is to become the worst person Dave has ever encountered in his life. However, both his attitude and his radical, questionable way of treating Dave are meant solely to force him to unleash all the pent-up anger he feels toward people who treat him badly or don’t respect him. Both his attitude in certain scenes and his way of doing things are quite funny because of how annoying, awkward, and even irritating he can be.
While the movie has its crude jokes, pranks, comments, and rather suggestive moments, it’s all worth it when you consider the story and the way we see our protagonist unleash all his anger in the final act. It’s precisely in this final part that we clearly see that the breaking point—the moment when Dave could take no more—was when his relationship with his girlfriend Linda was affected. I’ll tell you right now that the ending of this movie is absolutely worth it; whether or not you like Adam Sandler’s edgy, adult humor, this film is worth watching.

Another thing I really like about this movie is the way we see our protagonist unleash the anger he holds inside. First, he identifies the problem or the source of that anger. Then we see how he comes to cope with and vent his anger by singing, making jokes, or confronting that past trauma. Finally, we see how our protagonist decides to put his worries and fears behind him to face what scared him the most and make an important decision. We all struggle with dealing with the stress and anger we hold inside on a daily basis.
This movie might teach us a lesson or two that can help us deal with the anger that consumes us from within. Last but not least, let’s talk about the film’s audiovisual aspects. This is another of the film’s strengths, as the cinematography is noticeably better than in the previous films we’ve reviewed so far. The camera positioning, the types of shots, the framing, and the use of light and shadow are top-notch.

The visual effects aren't bad either, even though they use almost no computer-generated effects. Everything we see is practical, but it doesn't look too bad either. The art direction is also decent, until we start seeing some of the characters' slightly provocative clothing styles. Otherwise, the sound effects are fine, but what I like most about this movie (as always) is the soundtrack, which sometimes sounds a bit punk, but also features some quite melodic and orchestral scenes.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the comedy genre is concerned.
