One of the most interesting arrivals on Netflix in September 2019, was the series in three parts titled Inside Bill's Brain: Decoding Bill Gates. It has taken me some time to actually watch it, but I just finished it now, and I must say that it was extremely interesting in many ways.

I didn't really know what to expect before I started to watch the series. If you didn't know it, this is a Netflix original series, meaning that you can stream it in every single Netflix country, without changing your Netflix region or anything like that. I guess we have all heard about Bill Gates as the founder of Microsoft, and I thought that this series would tell the story of Bill Gates and how he created Microsoft. But, after watching the first episode, I was greatly surprised at what the series was all about... it was about so much more than Microsoft.

Inside Bill's Brain - episode 1

In the first episode, I felt as if it was really about how Bill Gates has spent his most recent years fighting to provide people in poor nations with clean water and making sure that poop and pee doesn't flow into the water which is later coming from the tap and in showers, but instead, that it is cleansed, and used to provide energy and once again clean water. It was really interesting to see the work he has done to make this dream come true and to see him drink a glass of water that was pee five minutes earlier was quite crazy.

Inside Bill's Brain - episode 2

In the second episode, I felt as if there were two topics that got the main focus. The first was the creation of Microsoft, which also deals with his relationship with Paul Allen. Here we also learn about Bill Gates and the pace at which he works, mostly without stopping. He says that weekends and days off weren't for him, especially in the period when he was writing code for Microsoft.

But, in the same episode, we also meet Bill in the current time and learn about his fight for getting rid of polio once and forever. And after the first episode, I thought it was only about clean water - and here I understood that it is so much more.

Inside Bill's Brain - episode 3

The third, and final episode, dealt with several topics. We get to know more about Bill and Melinda, about their marriage, how they met, and some of their challenges. But, even more, we get to see how tough it was for Bill when Microsoft was sued because of buying competitors and creating their own monopoly (making it hard for others to compete with them). This was a hard battle for Bill, and we get to see and learn more about him in this battle and how it affected him.

However, the final episode also dealt a lot with TerraPower, Bill Gates' initiative to create safe atomic power plants that will run on atomic waste that currently remains unused, stored here and there in the world. I didn't know that Bill has dealt with such thoughts at all, and it was interesting to hear his thoughts. In general, the public hates the sound of atomic power plants (because of Chernobyl, etc), but this made me look at the entire subject from a different point of view.

My thoughts on Inside Bill's Brain

I am really glad I have watched the three episodes. It feels as if I actually got to know more about Bill Gates, I understand more about his character, who he is, what he does, and what has made him one of the richest persons in the world. The constant desire in him to learn and to understand should encourage many of us to keep going, and also the pioneer spirit in him is something I admire. Most people would be discouraged if something they do would fail... Bill has lived through lots of delays and stuff that can be considered failures, but he is still there. And, while someone would say fighting polio is a battle enough in itself, he is at the same time working to save the planet earth due to the climate problem, he is working on an atomic power plant, he works with providing clean water to people, and so much more. How can one man be capable of all this? If you do not understand, watch this series and I believe you will understand it better in a couple of hours.

So, how did I really like the show?

I was surprised, in a very positive way. I learned so much about Bill Gates and his work, and it inspired me in many ways. You do not have to like Microsoft, nor Bill Gates, but one has got to admire this guy for everything he has accomplished.

Also, what do you do when you sit on the plane or go on a trip? Do you bring your cellphone and chat on WhatsApp? Or do you do like Bill Gates and bring a giant bag fo 7-8 books, in order to dive into a new area or to get even deeper knowledge on a subject he is already interested in?

Go ahead and watch it, I believe you will have a very good and inspiring time!

Ps: Of course, this series was created to show Bill Gates in a positive way. I am sure there are people who are angry and disagree with things, and who wouldn't portray Bill Gates as positively as what we see in the series. But, watch it no matter what, you will be challenged, inspired, and for sure learn some stuff about Bill that you didn't know.

Bill Gates è uno di quei personaggi, di quei pochi personaggi contemporanei di cui tutti conosciamo nome, volto e per sommi capi il motivo del suo successo. Un uomo come il fondatore della Microsoft è, però, tutt'altro che semplice da decifrare. E' una persona complessa, con pregi e difetti, ossessioni e comfort zone che ne hanno consentito l'ascesa. Netflix prova ad entrare nella mente del genio di Seattle attraverso una miniserie di 3 puntate. Protagonista assoluto Bill Gates ovviamente, qui intervistato e seguito durante alcune fasi delle sue giornate. La cosa interessante della serie è che riesce ad intrecciare gli aspetti dell'uomo con quello del genio e filantropo. Un lento ed inesorabile ondivagare fra l'infanzia e l'adolescenza di Bill, il suo periodo professionalmente più ricco di soddisfazioni, la sua vita privata e la sua avventura nella filantropia. Ed è proprio quest'ultimo aspetto quello che viene messo maggiormente in evidenza. Dal 2000 Gates e sua moglie Melinda hanno, infatti, messo in piedi una fondazione a loro nome nella quale anno dopo anno hanno investito miliardi di dollari per provare a ridurre le disuguaglianze nel mondo. Fantastica la risposta di Gates alla domanda dell'intervistatore "Perchè dedica la sua vita a ridurre le disuguaglianze?".

Per una questione di ottimizzazione delle risorse

Forse è in questa risposta la chiave di lettura di Bill Gates, per anni l'uomo più ricco al mondo. La sua vita è stata costellata dalla voglia di conoscere ogni dettaglio delle materie che decideva di studiare. Lui che non è andato all'università ma che avrà probabilmente letto più libri di chiunque altro. Riesce, ancora oggi, a leggere 150 pagine all'ora, riuscendo ad immagazzinare circa il 90% delle informazioni contenute nelle pagine appena lette. Un mostro. L'approccio di Bill Gates è comune a tutti i suoi progetti, professionali e non. Sceglie un argomento. Lo approfondisce ossessivamente. Diventa massimo esperto in materia, a prescindere da se si parli di energia nucleare o un argomento più semplice. Inizia a ragionare sul da farsi. Lancia delle sue idee. Contatta università, startup, scienziati e figure di riferimento. Inizia a finanziare e lavorare su progetti che reputa potenzialmente dei game changer. E' stato il suo approccio al college. Lo è stato quando è partito con la Microsoft. Lo è ancora oggi quando prova a risolvere problemi universali come malattie da debellare, servizi da garantire al terzo mondo, proteggere la terra dai cambiamenti climatici.

Nel documentario di Netflix non ci sono molte critiche a Gates come accade invece in altri documentari. Qualche riferimento, qualche domanda scomoda ma tendenzialmente l'atteggiamento è molto protettivo nei confronti del fondatore della Microsoft. In molti hanno contestato questo approccio. In fondo però che cosi ci avremmo guadagnato noi dal conoscere eventuali punti bui della sua vita?

Bill Gates è una persona abbastanza ossessiva, che in età Microsoft si chiudeva per mesi per poter migliorare i propri prodotti in prima persona anche sacrificando la sua vita privata per lunghi tratti e anche sacrificando amicizie importanti. Era un arrogante? Certo. Era una spina nel fianco? Probabilmente si. Ma ha raggiunto risultati impensabili. Ha cambiato il mondo. E oggi sta mettendo al servizio del mondo la sua visione e la sua ricchezza per provare a ridurre le disuguaglianze e proteggerci da noi stessi. E i risultati sono notevoli. E' riuscito a garantire servizi igienici in zone poco sviluppate, colpito da un dato incredibile. Ogni anno migliaia di bambini muoiono di diarrea. Circa 4 miliardi di persone non hanno un WC e oltre metà della terra non ha una rete fogniaria. Lui non ha semplicemente detto "metto soldi per portare una rete fogniaria nelle zone che non ce l'hanno" ma ha fatto di più. Ha provato ad inventare qualcosa che non esisteva e che potesse funzionare in quelle zone del mondo. Ha appreso che la poliomelite è ancora letale in alcune zone del mondo e si è prodigato affinchè fosse debellata. E' stato sconvolto da quanto l'uomo stia facendo harakiri sulla questione climatica ed ha chiamato a raccolta fisici e scienziati di altissimo livello per trovare insieme una soluzione. Di fronte ad un uomo che investe miliardi e tempo ed energie per limitare le disuguaglianze quanto è davvero interessante capire se sia stato arrogante più di un uomo medio? E' fondamentalmente irrilevante. Al contrario di tutto quello che il signor Bill Gates fa.

I've always been fascinated by Bill Gates' life. There are more than a couple of films out there that feature him in his rise to being the wealthiest person in the world when he was developing Microsoft but this is the first one that I have seen that focuses on his philanthropic work that focuses on improving the lives of the world's poorest people.

We all know who Mr. Gates is; he is one of the most famous people in the world due to the fact that he is the creator of one of the most dominant companies of all time. It probably doesn't hurt that he is very, very rich. However, what do we really know about this guy? He tends to stay out of the public eye and avoids having a public opinion on most things political as well.

I knew about the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and knew they did a lot of work in Africa and what not but was unaware that he wasn't just over there giving away money - he wanted to change the way things are done in terms of sanitation - primarily, building better toilets.

This is where a lot of viewers might get uncomfortable because there is some rather graphic imagery involving poo-poo. As tough as that is for us to look at, imagine how difficult it is to live in that sort of environment.

I am one of the many privileged people in the world, and i presume you are too, that has just always lived in an environment with effective sanitation systems, never realizing that this system is actually very complicated and also, quite expensive.

With the help of some seriously intelligent engineering pals that only someone with the clout the Bill Gates has access to, they build this thing: The Janicki Omni Processor. This machine takes human waste, and does something magical to it, and then converts it into ash, electricity (more than enough to power itself), and drinking water. Drinking water you say??? It sounds ridiculous but Bill himself was the first person to ever publicly try the processed water and he said "it tastes delicious."

I never knew much about Bill Gates the philanthropist and after watching this series I think he might be one of the best people on earth. He could just horde his money and not give a damn about poor people, but instead he commits billions of dollars and a lot of his very valuable time to projects that he stands to gain nothing from.

I feel as though the development of this machine, which is extraordinary, is an amazing development in technology and humanitarianism. For me anyway, it begs the question: why wasn't this all over the news?

Had you heard of it and my world-view just isn't as grand as I thought it was? Everyone should be talking about this. I suppose it should be no surprise that the media doesn't talk about this since it isn't political and has zero to do with war, Trump, Brexit, or global warming.

The series is 3 parts and while they do jump back and forth between topics they also talk about Bill's initiative to produce cheaper nuclear-based electricity and briefly touch base on how he doesn't believe current renewable energy options are a good choice. I did find it a bit patronizing that they focus on how he met and wooed Melinda - it is almost as if they were suggesting that Bill was too nerdy and funny-looking to land a chick.

Bill does become a bit defensive when they discuss the anti-trust cases that took place in the 90's but for the most part Mr. Gates seems like a very approachable and down to earth dude.

What he is doing should be all over the news and I find it quite tragic that it isn't. Perhaps this very entertaining and informative docu-series will help to change that.
