New Year's Eve (2011) [ENG/ESP]@yaslenysofia181d
ENGLISH
Greetings @Movies&Tvshows community…
This week marks the start of a new year, and I wanted to revisit a film that captures those end-of-year moments, with interconnected stories that reflect people's experiences in different settings and situations. So, if you want to pass the time until midnight watching a movie, I recommend you check this one out.
Released in 2011, directed by Garry Marshall and produced by Toby Emmerich, this romantic comedy boasted a large cast, including Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Sarah Paulson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Robert De Niro, Josh Duhamel, Zac Efron, and many more.
As I mentioned, it's a series of interconnected stories, all set in the great city of New York, and all unfolding as the city prepares for the iconic ball drop in Times Square. Among the various characters is a lonely executive, overwhelmed by a boss and a demanding job, who hires a young messenger to help her complete her list of New Year's resolutions before midnight.
Simultaneously, we see a compassionate nurse caring for a terminally ill patient who regrets his past actions and only wants to see the Times Square celebration; in another scene, a musician and a young singer are trapped in an elevator; the Alliance's vice president is in charge of the ball drop, making preparations; a mother is struggling with her teenage daughter, whose wish is to spend New Year's Eve with her friends; a pregnant couple learns that the first child born in the new year will win a sum of money; and many more stories will intertwine throughout the plot. Above all, they show us that sometimes things don't turn out as expected, that it's inevitable, but what you can control is forgiveness, second chances, and that there will always be hope for a new beginning.
I really liked this movie when it came out, and I still like it, even though it has its flaws and is largely disappointing. First, I'll mention the elements I liked most. New York City itself is the main character, and everyone within it perfectly embodies what it means to experience that special moment in the city. They reflect the magic it transmits, which I understand is beautiful and something many people long to experience. Most of the storylines worked, and the chemistry between the characters was good, but others didn't, and some scenes were even overwhelming, making the film overly sentimental and out of place with the developing plot. I think it should have been more profound in those aspects. Certainly, love is a great way to express it at the end of the year, but there are many different kinds of love, and it could have been portrayed more effectively.
Although the film has some touching moments, some parts were boring and lost sight of the excitement of the Times Square ball drop and stories that had so much more to offer, more depth. Plus, some of the narratives felt repetitive and clichéd. When I looked up information about this movie, I discovered it was nominated for worst picture. Ouch! I mean, I did feel like a waste of a great cast, but hey, at least there are stories worth watching. Besides, many of them repeat the same things and still end up being enjoyable. I'm not saying you'll love it, but it is entertaining, there's no denying that, and it has that feeling that it really is New Year's Eve.
5/10 Story │ 7.5/10 Acting │ 6/10 Sound │ 8/10 Set Design │ 5.5/10 Overall
Even with its flaws, as I said, there are things that do work and stories that move you, reflecting that the end of the year is a time for forgiveness, even for forgiving yourself; it's a celebration that invites you to reflect on the new year that's approaching and with it, new opportunities to come. So, even with the predictable parts and those lacking much excitement, let yourselves be moved by those that touch the soul, wishing you, with this film, a happy and prosperous 2026.

5/10 Historia │ 7.5/10 Actuaciones │ 6/10 Sonido │ 8/10 Escenario │ 5.5/10 General

›New Year's Eve (film) : It felt like too much of a copy of Love Actually@gooddream2736d
I discovered this movie by accident because at the time the guesthouse that I owned it was our thing to feature movies at night. This was 10 years ago before smartphones and it was actually a big part of the backpacker culture back then. It was of questionable legality (in that it almost certainly was not legal for me to play them) but things work a little differently in Asia - whatever. Anyway, I played the film because of its name alone, and all throughout the movie it just seemed like a "Love Actually' rip off.
This is not to suggest that the movie is bad. It isn't. However I am very critical of film makers copying something else and attempting to present it as a new product. I suppose I should just shut up because the way in which this film (and Love Actually) tell their story is actually a lot of fun in the way that it is non-linear and all the characters have their own stories going on yet many of the stories overlap one another.
One of the stories is how Stan Harris (DeNiro) is in the final stages of cancer and his nurse Aimee (Hale Berry) is comforting him as he is prepared to die but wants to watch the ball drop one last time. It's kind of touching but mostly the emotion is forced because of the music and sound, rather than being terribly believable or even endearing. I don't know if that makes sense.
The problem with this story as opposed to Love Actually, is that most of the intermingled stories that are going on are quite boring. There's no real compelling story here and it becomes quite obvious that they are simply taking advantage of the holiday spirit. That's not to say that such a thing is off limits because this very practice has been done for nearly every superstar at one point or another (Jingle all the Way with Arnold springs to mind.)
The cast is absolutely loaded with big names and I suppose at times, it is reasonably entertaining. However, the stories themselves are just a bit lame for the most part and I hope that doesn't make me seem completely devoid of normal human sentiment. I also don't like that the stories have obvious outcomes and are borderline cliche.
The film was almost universally panned by critics and fans alike but that didn't stop the film from making nearly $100 million. I actually feel New Year's Eve is a bit better than the prevailing opinion, but not by much. I have to admit that this movie is pretty fun if you are going to turn it into a drinking game and drink every time something cringe-worthy happens - which is frequently. Better get a case.
