Salem's Lot

Posiblemente, las obras escritas por Stephen King, sean de las más difíciles de recrear tanto en la pequeña como gran pantalla; esto lo digo porque siempre he visto mayormente descontento por parte de fans y del mismo escritor a varias producciones estrenadas y personalmente encuentro desmotivado al momento de querer ver algún film basado en dichas obras, aunque en los últimos tiempos he usado la práctica del disminuir mis expectativas esperando disfrutar de una historia de monstruos y de quienes deben enfrentarlos.

Possibly, the novels written by Stephen King, are among the most difficult to recreate both on the small and big screen; I say this because I have always seen mostly dissatisfaction on the part of fans and the writer himself to several productions released and I personally find unmotivated when wanting to see a film based on these works, although in recent times I have used the practice of lowering my expectations hoping to enjoy a story of monsters and those who must face them.

"'Salem's Lot", cuenta con dos miniseries estrenadas en 1979 y 2004, lo cual significa que esta nueva versión original de MAX es la primera adaptación cinematográfica de esta obra; está historia sobrenatural y de terror, relata las vidas de los habitantes del pueblo "Jerusalem's Lot", un lugar pronto a cambiar por la llegada de una criatura de la noche que con su sed de sangre tratará de dominar a todo el pueblo, pero habrá quienes no caerán en mentiras y manipulaciones y harán lo posible para primeramente sobrevivir y después salvar a su hogar de una noche eterna.

"Salem's Lot", has two miniseries released in 1979 and 2004, which means that this new original MAX version is the first film adaptation of this work; This supernatural and horror story tells the lives of the inhabitants of the town "Jerusalem's Lot", a place soon to be changed by the arrival of a creature of the night that with its thirst for blood will try to dominate the whole town, but there will be those who will not fall for lies and manipulations and will do their best to first survive and then save their home from an eternal night.

El encargado tanto de la dirección y escritura del guion fue Gary Dauberman, quien alcanzó la fama al co escribir guiones para "It (2017) y "It: Chapter Two" (2019), aunque también escribió los tres filmes del spin-off de "The Conjuring", me refiero a "Annabelle". Para este film, Dauberman cumpliría por segunda ocasión de su carrera el rol de director; puedo decir que su trabajo en ciertas escenas de tensión y terror son mejores que en su anterior y primer film como director; hay escenas divertidas con buenas secuencias de terror y acción; al igual que buenas escenografías lo cual con la correcta iluminación y cierto uso de colores, da la sensación de ver un film realizado entre los 70’ y 80’.

El guion es el punto débil del film; a pesar de estar presentes características impuestas por King en sus obras, por ejemplo lo referente a la oscuridad que cubre a los lugares en donde se desarrollan sus historias, creo que el gran fallo está en la nula relevancia de sus personajes; no hay un adecuado desarrollo y si una breve presentación de los motivos y pasados de cada uno mientras entran en escena; eso hace que no exista una completa conexión con varios de sus protagonistas principales sean héroes o villanos y le resta el dramatismo que pudo hacer mejor el relato de esta historia.

In charge of both the direction and screenwriting was Gary Dauberman, who achieved fame by co-writing screenplays for "It (2017) and "It: Chapter Two" (2019), although he also wrote the three films of the spin-off of "The Conjuring", I mean "Annabelle". For this film, Dauberman would fulfill for the second time in his career the role of director; I can say that his work in certain scenes of tension and terror are better than in his previous and first film as director; there are funny scenes with good sequences of terror and action; as well as good scenographies which with the correct lighting and certain use of colors, gives the sensation of seeing a film made between the 70' and 80'.

The script is the weak point of the film; in spite of being present characteristics imposed by King in his works, for example the darkness that covers the places where his stories are developed, I believe that the great failure is in the null relevance of his characters; there is not an adequate development and if a brief presentation of the motives and pasts of each one while they enter the scene; that makes that there is not a complete connection with several of its main protagonists whether heroes or villains and subtracts the dramatism that could make better the story of this story.

Muchos de los actores son víctimas de lo que ofrece el guion, el poco desarrollo de los personajes evita que exista la química entre ellos y que podamos ver un mejor film, pero a pesar de eso, si hubo dos actuaciones o dos personajes de los cuales pude disfrutar de su tiempo en escena, ellos son Bill Camp y Jordan Preston Carter quienes interpretaron a "Matthew Burke" y "Mark Petrie"; ambos personajes en mi opinión tienen cierto parecido, ya que ambos son valientes y están dispuestos a todo por hacer lo correcto, en eso ambos actores saben representar un mismo sentido por la justicia, pero con una diferencia de actitud. Lamento que el guion no fuera el adecuado para desarrollar las historias de "Ben" y "Susan", interpretados por Lewis Pullman y Makenzie Leigh. Seguramente su historia de amor debió proveer el necesario dramatismo al film, pero su actuación víctima de las circunstancias, no fue para nada buena.

Many of the actors are victims of what the script offers, the little development of the characters prevents the chemistry between them and we can see a better film, but despite that, if there were two performances or two characters of which I could enjoy their time on stage, they are Bill Camp and Jordan Preston Carter who played "Matthew Burke" and "Mark Petrie"; both characters in my opinion have a certain resemblance, as both are brave and willing to do anything to do the right thing, in that both actors know how to represent the same sense for justice, but with a difference in attitude. I regret that the script was not adequate to develop the stories of "Ben" and "Susan", played by Lewis Pullman and Makenzie Leigh. Surely their love story should have provided the necessary drama to the film, but their performance, a victim of circumstance, was not good at all.

Puedo decir que me sorprendió el descontento que creó el estreno de este film basado en 'Salem's Lot y es que a pesar de tener fallos, en mi opinión es una versión muy entretenida; una de las virtudes que encontré fue el correcto trabajo de Gary Dauberman en la dirección siendo esta su segunda vez detrás de las cámaras; me gusta la importancia que se le da a todo lo referente al Vampirismo, la transformación, la crueldad, el asecho, el humor y por supuesto sus debilidades; eso me pareció genial así como el homenaje a producciones antiguas de monstruos y criaturas de la noche. Este film para muchos es otra errada adaptación a una obra de Stephen King, creo que al ser tan suave y corta, se priva de dar un salto de calidad, pero siendo completamente sincero, es mejor que muchos films de terror estrenados en este año.

I can say that I was surprised by the discontent that created the release of this film based on 'Salem's Lot and despite having flaws, in my opinion it is a very entertaining version; one of the virtues I found was the correct work of Gary Dauberman in the direction being this his second time behind the cameras; I like the importance given to everything related to Vampirism, the transformation, the cruelty, the stalking, the humor and of course their weaknesses; I thought that was great as well as the homage to old productions of monsters and creatures of the night. This film for many is another misguided adaptation of a work by Stephen King, I think that being so soft and short, it deprives itself of a jump in quality, but being completely honest, it is better than many horror films released this year.
