How many movies from Holland have you seen? Maybe very few, but there are excellent productions made in that country. One of the films I remember most is Karakter, which won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1997. It was a film that made an impact on me, it was a powerful drama set in the 1920s where a young man must confront his father.
The film I am going to give you my opinion and review of is a thriller with lots of murders and black comedy. A mixture that fits my peculiar cinematic tastes.
The original title of the film is De Kuthoer, which means The Abuser. Now, all over the world it has received the title The Columnist, because in reality Kuthoer is a specific term used in that country to indicate a person who abuses and harasses on the Internet. For commercial purposes it was better to find a title that focused on the extraordinary woman protagonist of the story.
Abuse and social networks, you must already be making connections and imagining where the plot of this movie goes. A very current issue in our day to day life. The proliferation of abusers, trolls and haters that make life on the internet, either in forums, social networks or any corner of that world where they can expose all their hatred.
Screenwriter Daan Windhorst is based on an old story he wrote some time ago. The film will make us ask ourselves some questions about the use of social networks and the way the protagonist of the story decides to face the haters. It seems to me an ideal film to make forum cinema, because the topic is really important.

¿Cuántas películas de Holanda has visto? Quizás muy pocas, pero hay excelentes producciones hechas en ese país. Una de las películas que más recuerdo es Karakter, que gano el premio Oscar a mejor película de habla no inglesa en el año 1997. Fue un film que me impacto, era un potente drama ambientado en los años 20 donde un joven debe enfrentarse a su padre.
El film que voy a darles mi opinión y review es un thriller con muchos asesinatos ycomedia negra. Una mezcla que se adapta a mis peculiares gustos cinematográficos.
El título original del film es De Kuthoer, cuyo significado serie El abusador. Ahora, en todo el mundo ha recibido el titulo de La Columnista, porque en realidad Kuthoer es un término específico usado en ese país para señalar a una persona que abusa y acosa en internet. Para efectos comerciales era mejor buscar un titulo que se enfocara en la extraordinaria protagonista de la historia.
Abuso y redes sociales, ya debes estar haciendo conexiones e imaginar por donde va la trama de este film. Un tema muy vigente en nuestra vida cotidiana. La proliferación de abusadores, trolls y haters que hacen vida en internet, ya sea en foros, redes sociales o cualquier rincón de ese mundo donde pueden exponer todo su odio.
El escritor Daan Windhorst escribió el guion basándose en un antiguo cuento que escribió hace un tiempo. El film nos hará plantearnos algunas preguntas sobre el uso de las redes sociales y la forma en que la protagonista de la historia decide enfrentarse a los haters. Me parece una película ideal para hacer un cine foro, porque el tema es realmente importante.
What is the plot The Columnist
Femke Boot is a successful writer. She has a column in the country's leading newspaper and is being pressured by her publisher to quickly deliver a new book for publication. Femke is constantly attacked on social media, especially on twitter, on internet forums and in the comments section of her column. Many people hate her and every day they pour venom against her. That is affecting her, she feels depressed and can't concentrate to write the book they demand from her. Also, the criminal history writer Steven Dodo seems to be a great success, soon they will get close and start a relationship. She is divorced and lives with her teenage daughter Anna. Tired of so much hate, she begins to dig into the users who insult her, until she discovers that one of them is her own neighbor. Femke will make a decision that will change her life completely and she will find herself involved in a crime spiral. Is what she is doing right? Is it a solution? What about freedom of speech? Is what she is doing justified? Is it all real? Or is it part of the story she is writing?

Harassment and hate messages on social networks are commonplace. When you are a famous public figure or even just have a small space where you express your ideas on the internet, it is inevitable to run into haters and trolls who only intend to harm and hurt other people.
Most of them are losers, cowards unable to be brave in their real life, so it is easier to hide behind an avatar to release all the venom that consumes them inside.
Some are strong and know that not paying attention to them is the best thing to do, those kind of people feed on responses. Ignoring them is the best solution, I have always said it and I have put it into practice since I started surfing the Internet in the late nineties.
But in the case of the main character in the film, it's the opposite. She does pay attention to the bad comments, the insults and all the hate messages she receives for writing a column in a newspaper where she expresses her ideas.
The protagonist will fall into such a depression that she will not be able to write her new book. When she discovers that her own neighbor is one of those who leaves negative comments about her, she decides to act and crosses a moral line that will trigger a series of horrible events.
It is at this point in the story where we will rethink freedom of speech. She has her column where she expresses her ideas and those who are against those ideas have every right to express their rejection, some politely, others with insults and threats. But that is also freedom of expression, isn't it? When she starts a vendetta against everyone, she is violating the freedom of expression of those who think against her.
It's an interesting debate that the unfolding of the story raises. For a moment I identified with the protagonist, but suddenly I began to think that what she does, besides being a crime, is violating the freedom of other people.
Acoso y mensajes de odio en las redes sociales es algo común. Cuando se es una figura pública famosa o incluso con solo tener un pequeño espacio donde expresas tus ideas en internet, es inevitable toparse con haters y trolls que solo pretenden dañar y herir a otras personas.
En su mayoría son perdedores, cobardes incapaces de ser valientes en su vida real, por eso es más fácil escudarse tras un avatar para botar todo el veneno que los consume por dentro.
Algunas personas son fuertes y saben que no prestarles atención es lo mejor, ese tipo de personas se alimenta de las respuestas. Ignorarlos es la mejor solución, siempre lo he dicho y he puesto en práctica desde que comencé a navegar en internet a finales de los noventa.
Pero en el caso del personaje protagonista del film, es todo lo contrario. Ella si presta atención a los malos comentarios, insultos y todos los mensajes de odio que recibe por escribir una columna en un periódico donde expresa sus ideas.
La protagonista caerá en una depresión que no podrá escribir su nuevo libro. Cuando descubre que su propio vecino es uno de los que deja comentarios negativos sobre ella, decide tomar acción y traspasara una línea moral que desencadenara una serie de horribles hechos.
Es en este punto de la historia donde nos replantearemos la libertad de expresión. Ella tiene su columna donde expresa sus ideas y los que están en contra de esas ideas tienen todo el derecho de manifestar su rechazo, algunos de forma educada, otros con insultos y amenazas. Pero eso es también libertad de expresión. ¿o no? Al ella comenzar una venganza contra todos, está vulnerando la libertad de expresión de los que piensan contrario a ella.
Es un interesante debate que nos plantea el desarrollo de la historia. Por un momento me identifique con la protagonista, pero de repente me puse a pensar que lo que hace, además de ser un delito, está vulnerando la libertad de otras personas.
To enjoy the film, you have to have an open mind to accept the rules of this black comedy full of blood. Because some situations may seem far-fetched. Without saying any spoilers, for example in one scene I wondered how that woman who looks fragile and without self-defense training, can immobilize a man who weighs twice as much as her.
The screenwriter and director have been ingenious, because their final part can be subject to two interpretations. One has to do with the book Femke is writing: is it all part of reality, or is it all part of the book's story? To get an answer you have to watch the film and at the end draw your own conclusions.
Para que disfrutes del film, debes tener la mente abierta a aceptar las reglas de esta comedia negra llena de sangre. Porque algunas situaciones pueden parecer inverosímiles. Sin decir ningún spoiler, por ejemplo en una escena me pregunte como esa mujer que se ve frágil y sin entrenamiento en defensa personal, puede inmovilizar a un hombre que pesa el doble que ella.
El escritor y el director han sido ingeniosos, porque su parte final puede estar sujeta a dos interpretaciones. Una de ellas tiene que ver con el libro que está escribiendo Femke. ¿es todo parte de la realidad? ¿O es todo parte de la historia del libro? Para obtener una respuesta debes ver el film y al final sacar tus propias conclusiones
Who is the director?
Ivo van Aart is the young filmmaker directing the film written by Daan Windhorst. I have not seen any previous work by the filmmaker. If you check his IMDB record, he has directed several short films and has experience in Dutch TV series.
I liked his directing work, the story is well paced and the scenes of violence and blood are very well done. The story hooks, keeps us attentive to the fate of the protagonist and I laughed several times with the crazy crimes she commits.
The work is complemented by Martijn Cousijn in the direction of photography, luminous and full of beautiful colors. I must mention that the final part radiates a haunting beauty. The atmosphere of the film is completed by the music of composer Jeffrey van Rossum.

Ivo van Aart es el joven cineasta que dirige la película escrita por Daan Windhorst. No he visto ningún trabajo anterior del cineasta. Revise su ficha en IMDB y ha dirigido varios cortometrajes y tiene experiencia en series de televisión holandesas.
Me ha gustado su trabajo de dirección, la historia tiene buen ritmo y las escenas de violencia y sangre fueron hechas muy bien. La historia engancha, nos mantenemos atentos al destino de la protagonista y me reí varias veces con los alocados crímenes que comete.
El trabajo lo complementan Martijn Cousijn en la dirección de fotografía, luminosa y llena de hermosos colores. Debo mencionar que la parte final irradia una perturbadora belleza. Completa la atmosfera del film la música del compositor Jeffrey van Rossum.

La actriz de 40 años de edad, tiene una fructífera trayectoria en cine, televisión y teatro en su país de origen. Para muchos de nosotros que vivimos en el continente Americano, puede ser una actriz poco conocida, pero es una profesional de éxito en Holanda. También ha trabajado en series de Estados Unidos, como en The Americans, Evil y Westworld. Intentare buscar más trabajos de esta actriz hechos en Europa, me parece qu e hizo un estupendo trabajo en este film.
The other two important characters in the story are Steven Dood, the crime novel writer who starts a sentimental relationship with Femke and Anna Boot, the teenage daughter who will make a serious discovery and think that Steven is a serial killer. These characters are played by the actor Bram van der Kelen and the young actress Claire Porro.
Los otros dos personajes importantes de la historia son Steven Dood, el escritor de novelas criminales que inicia una relación romántica con Femke y Anna Boot, la hija adolescente que hará un grave descubrimiento y pensara que Steven es un asesino en serie. Estos personajes son interpretados por el actor Bram van der Kelen y la joven actriz Claire Porro.
Have you ever encountered a social media stalker, a hater, a troll? You will find this film entertaining, because of the decision the protagonist makes to fight against those haters who smear and insult her every day on twitter.
The columnist is a black comedy with a very current theme. Let yourself be carried away by the crazy story that is presented to us and I assure you that you will have a good time. I don't know in which streaming platform you can find it in your country, do a search on the internet.
