A while back I wrote about some plumbing work I required to be done at one of my houses; it wasn't something I was comfortable to do myself considering the nature and importance of the job as far as water management goes; buggering it up and flooding out my property wasn't something I was willing to risk just to save a few bucks.

I was finding it difficult to get a quote done - people didn't want to turn up to quote - and I was getting annoyed until I finally got onto a plumbing group who filled me with confidence from the first call and throughout the inspection, assessment and quoting process. I haven't decided who I'll use yet but the group I mention are the frontrunners.

The problem, yeah there's always a problem, is that they're really expensive; far more costly than the others.

I'm the buy one cry once guy meaning I'd rather pay more for quality the first time than to buy poor quality and have to re-buy when it reveals the reason it was cheaper in the first place; it's a more costly way to go. How do I know my plumbing job, one that requires concrete cutting and replacement as well, will be done satisfactorily? Seeing a product prior to purchasing is one thing, but with services that's not always possible. I actually don't know the job will be done right but taking the time to choose what I believe to be the best group helps somewhat.

The good thing is that they took the time to explain the situation, why the scope of the work was a little more complex than I'd first thought and pointed out the dangers of doing a half-assed solution. I soon came to understand that the job the others would do, though cheaper, had the potential to come back and bite me on my taut and pleasing to look at ass later costing me even more. Do it right first time, is the plumbing group's ethos apparently and I appreciate that and their transparency so I'll be making a final decision this weekend...and I think I know who I'll be using already.

What experiences have to had with having to make a choice between a more and less expensive option and did it go well or badly? Feel free to explain the situation in the comments below if you'd like.

I've thought from a while ago that repeatinly paying for cheaper poor qualitied services or goods is in the end more expensive (also annoying) than paying for a high quality ones once. At home sometimes I try to handle some small jobs for two reasons.
1. It feels good to get a job done by myself when the result is the desired and somehow kind of enjoy the process, even if is uncertain as the times I've had to investigate to get ot done out of unexperienced previous attempts.
2. Saving a few bucks, as you say, sometimes is welcome here.
What is certain is that when the job goes way far from my expertises a quality provider must be found even if more expensive.

A lasting job becomes cheaper in time.

As you said, it usually doesn't go the way that you had hoped when you take the less expensive route. I'm pretty lucky that my buddy can do a lot of this handy man stuff when I get in over my head. He isn't cheap, but he knows his stuff, and I don't like feeling as though I am taking advantage of him, so I am happy to pay. He does give me a bit of a discount :)

I think, if the expensive option can demonstrate why it costs that much, I would pay for it without thinking twice.

There are many scammers who inflate their prices because expensive equals good quality, and that’s not always the case. To avoid falling into this bias, I would ask them to simply explain the work to be done, and if I’m convinced (and can afford it), I would pay for the more expensive option.

However, these days it’s hard to find someone who wants to work in those professions (which sector are they migrating to?)

I'm on your same opinion, better spend more but be done than less and keep stacking expenses... It's true with products you can see them, judge yourself and read reviews, with works to be done it's different, you need to rely on your intuitions, usually I check the attitude and competency of the person... Honestly I never had much chances as I live in rent and other sorts big works, but like when I had to pick a plumber for a small job I went to the one that seemed more capable and of good attitude, he explained well the problem and how to sort it for good and how to avoid it to happen again... After the work (change a tube) he showed me the old tube and said he could have sorted the problem with a small fix but then sooner or later the tube would break, bringing more problems and other fixes, so he just changed it straight, spending more than the small fix but less than a future break
