Using a Shakti Mat at Home: It’s Almost Like Having My Own Acupuncture Treatment
My first acupuncture treatment was when I was in elementary school, around 8 or 9 years old. I went to an acupuncture clinic with my grandmother. She had been interested in Eastern medicine and treatments for many years. The reason I had my first treatment was that I had twisted my ankle.
I was so scared of having acupuncture treatment because my image of it was all about sharp needles. The doctor at the clinic was very gentle, and he started without using needles. He showed me some kind of spikes with handles and explained that these spikes would not go into my skin. I really appreciated that he explained everything clearly.
Little by little, I started having actual acupuncture treatments. Since then, acupuncture has become a regular part of my life. When I was a high school student, I had my first severe backache. I couldn't move at all. Acupuncture became one of the things that supported me when I was struggling with my physical condition.
However, I couldn't find an ideal practitioner near me in my current country. I tried acupuncture once, but it wasn't really my style. I've also tried chiropractic treatments, a few different types of massage, foot massages, and more throughout my life. I think acupuncture is the best treatment for me when I have sharp pain or want to maintain my physical condition, especially when it comes to my autonomic nervous system. Since I stopped having acupuncture treatments, I've noticed that my energy levels are pretty low when I don't have them.
I had been curious about a Shakti Mat, but I couldn't remember where I had seen one. I forgot the name of the product, but then the name came back to me. Finally, I decided to purchase one.
There are three intensity levels, so I decided to get Level 2 because I thought it would provide enough pressure with its many spikes. It features thousands of precision-engineered plastic spikes mounted on cotton fabric with foam filling depending on the intensity level, mounted on cotton fabric with foam filling.
I was also extra careful about my allergies. If the spikes contain natural rubber or any kind of metal, I can't use them. Mine is completely allergy-free. I was excited while waiting for the delivery.
I ordered the Classic Essentials Bundle, even though I was hesitant because my dog's white hair tends to stick to the material of the mat. Unfortunately, my mat was only available in black, although there are multiple colour options for some of the other items. Anyway, the black colour with the cool, mandala-like design looks pretty cool.
Okay, so what exactly is a Shakti Mat?
The Shakti Mat is an acupressure mat inspired by the traditional Indian bed of nails. It is designed to help relieve muscle tension, boost circulation, and promote relaxation. It was designed in Sweden by Om Mokshananda in 2007. Two New Zealanders later bought the rights and turned it into a global business.
Every Shakti Mat is 100% handmade. They are carefully hand-stitched, clipped, and quality-checked by local craftspeople at the Gratitude Factory in Varanasi and through a fair-trade network in Delhi, India. I even found a name tag in the package showing who created my mat.
The instructions recommend starting with 10 to 15 minutes and gradually working your way up to 20 to 40 minutes per session. I started with 20 minutes. I'm thinking about extending the time after I've used it for almost two weeks.
The instructions also recommend wearing a thin T-shirt if you have a lot of pain. For me, I like to experience the full pressure, so I don't wear a shirt.
Yes, it is painful for a few minutes until your skin starts to feel numb. After I start feeling numbness, I become completely relaxed. I start yawning, feel warm, and sometimes fall asleep without noticing. When the timer rings, I feel very refreshed, or sometimes like I just want to go straight to bed.
The skin on my back looks very red afterward, and I have small spots like dots for a while. However, after a few minutes, all the dots disappear. I've never had an allergic reaction so far, even though I have had allergic reactions to authentic acupuncture needles. This is a big benefit for someone like me who has multiple allergies.
There is only one thing. When I finish and get up from the mat, that can be even more painful than when I first lie down on it!
Benefits of Using a Shakti Mat
A Shakti Mat may help relax tense muscles, promote relaxation and stress relief, improve blood circulation, reduce muscle soreness and discomfort, and support better sleep and overall relaxation, etc...
I think I want to continue having my own acupuncture-like treatment using this mat for many years. My sleep quality has been very stable these days. Hopefully, my chronic pre-existing medical condition will remain stable as well.
Anyway, I'm enjoying my little at-home acupuncture experience!
