One thing I love doing is crocheting without instructions, but last night I challenged myself to follow a pattern made by AI. So, I asked AI if it could create a replica of my favourite red monkey.
I first took a photo of my Monkey and submitted it in chatGPT. I was impressed that it gave me the pattern. So to test it, I followed the step-by-step.
RED MONKEY CROCHET PATTERN
🧶 Materials Needed:
Yarn (Red, Beige/Tan, Black)
3.0 mm or 3.5 mm crochet hook
Fiberfill stuffing
Yarn needle
Stitch marker
Scissors
Here's the instruction:
ASSEMBLY
Sew head to body.
Attach arms, legs.
Sew ears to the sides of the head.
Weave in all ends securely.
I added a hair tuft.
Result. (Haha!) Well, I would have done this differently if I had let my imagination take the lead. One thing the AI got right is that my monkey did not have a tail. However, the seamless-effect face panel suggested actually made the face more difficult to create. The ears are too big and should have added length to the extremities.
But he’s a character on his own!
What AI cannot replace is the skill involved in making these crafts, the ability to exercise good judgment, and the unique creativity that comes from using your own imagination. To be honest, I probably would have replicated my little red monkey even better if I had trusted my own ideas rather than following the AI’s instructions.
But anyway, my red Monkey now has a quirky new twin!
And he has to get on with him!
This Morning, my cat managed to reach it and dunked it in his water bowl, so this monkey is soaking wet and drying outside.
