Me pasó algo terrible.

Aquello no tenia sentido.

¿No sé dónde estoy!

Something terrible happened to me. This has been happening to me for a long time. I am losing my memory and, in reality, that is not the worst part. The problem is being aware of all the things that happened to me and realizing that I have stopped remembering them. Ghosts everywhere, fright and pain from the emotion that the exonerated legends generate. Names, aromas, senses, will be a premonition, while oblivion will discomfort everyone, except me. Age advances and memories have decided to leave. I suppose, I think, because now I doubt and they make me doubt everything, that my lucidity considers that those around me are in the way, that they weigh me down, they hurt, or they are no longer necessary. I am as lukewarm as the dark beverage that should warm me.
In that compendium of experiences, there is a batch of events that never happened, of that I am sure. They are instances I imagined and fabricated as fantasy, since reality did not carry them out, and those will be the cruelest of ironies. Her name was Lines. I fell madly in love without being reciprocated. Her rejection was polite, she did it with grace and without being uncomfortable with my declaration of love. We were having coffee. We were chatting at a table that was in front of a window in my house. I swore to always make her smile, just to be close to that expression of happiness that made my heart race. Hello... I know more about you than you yourself do, what you are, who you are. I know you better than your mirror, but my observation has been to draw you among letters, sighs, and the kiss I give to a glass. I will never be able to forget you, I swear it. I know you don't see yourself the way I see you, that's why every day, at some point, you turn around, you stop reflecting yourself, and you leave. 20 years have passed since that stumble of my soul. I never physically heard from her again, although in the ethereal realm, she accompanied me everywhere. In some parallel reality, we were happy, we had children, and we loved each other like no one ever has. There was a moment in that fiction where every caress and kiss we never gave each other became real to me. My escape was to invent a lie that I decided to live and not forget, just so I wouldn't lose her completely. I depended on her virtuality and there, in the chimeras of a strange galaxy, she said yes to me, she always accepted me, and we were boyfriend and girlfriend, lovers, a couple, friends, accomplices. That's right, I clung to that petty imaginary world so as not to feel again the desolation and enormous sadness I suffered during the few days I collapsed, after being rejected by my best friend.
Don't blame her. No one can force their heartbeats to accelerate with empathy, if on the other side, that person doesn't cause the same in you. She left, she moved, she migrated, she was gone from me. Her destination was another nation, her journey took her on a new course, latitude, where she was no longer close. There are no photos, no candles, only a diary where I write about how we happened in my imagination among verses and letters. After all, I understand her. I was unemployed, I had no dreams, other than the one I had for her. So much time has passed and now I possess only the fortune that God gifted me when I decided to rise from suspicions. I was lost, wasting my five senses, I was just a teenager whose hormones kept him lethargic, while the pages of her work stopped being written seconds after the plane departed. I stopped staining that diary with ink. I spent two decades fabricating many fantasies in which we had a life together, but the obvious truth was a cruel distance. I knew everything was unreal. Nevertheless, I had a great certainty: the day would come when my own body would have to get rid of my inventions. I was in love with a person who was not with me but who, despite that, I did not miss. I kissed a woman who kept her mouth shut after a denial. I made love to a harmonious being, whose only imperfection was being invisible to the eyes of others. I spent decades devoted to the fable of a lady whose whereabouts I didn't know, even though she accompanied me to all sides of my windows and still, she did not belong to me.
The coffee is cold. I have blurry nebulas from when my daughter, at nine years old, was holding my hand and for a moment I doubted. "Dad? What's wrong, dad?" was the desperate question my own dynasty asked me, without suspecting that I was submerged in the first of many gaps where I was beginning to drown, because in front of me, for the first time, I saw a person I thought was a stranger. Stupefied, with anguish and dread, I lie stopped, preventing my face from collapsing and knocking everything around me down. Sweat and my throat tighten from the panic and resignation of having strayed so much in my search for Lines. The chemistry remained intact, but it was biology that made the mistake, I had not calculated how much it would hurt others to have clung to the woman in separation, when I could have embraced those who were actually close to me. It hurts... it has been desperate. The mind has those atrocities, making you completely forget your creation and instead torturing you with that scene where you realized that the mental lapse was not a coincidence, but rather the beginning of the end of all your family relationships. Since then, I returned to writing. I decided to record, by hand and letter, my experiences again to glance at them when I remembered. I thought it would be comforting to read about who those close to me were. Instead, all the lines described only one person, the woman I still remembered. That made no sense. My brain had execrated all human beings, leaving only the name of the one who had justifiably told me she could not, would not, or knew how to accompany me on all my excursions. It was unfair and cruel to my family, but it was also cruel to myself.
I had to stop writing to her. But before that happened, I promised Lines I would say goodbye. One night, while praying to gain time for judgment and coherence, I had the idea to forget her plannedly. If the letters left, she wouldn't be there either... It couldn't be difficult, I thought. After all, my brain had already been indiscriminately erasing my loved ones and friends from my perception. I was 50 years old and I no longer recognized the mother of my children, nor my own mother. Something expelled them from my experiences, but there, in my daily surroundings, they were. In that phase of the illness, it didn't hurt me to ask them who they were and if they could help me find Lines. Right now I see the people in front of me crying at my pleas to reunite with the love of my life. I think none of them ever understood how important that lady with cinnamon-colored curly hair was to me. In my senile clumsiness, I had forgotten my promise to stop remembering her. Thus, the clearest thing happening to my ideas, at all hours, was the presence of the person who did not choose to stay, just as the strangers who inhabit my house did. "Where am I? I don't know where I am! What am I doing here?... Hey... you.. who are you?" In front of me is a twelve-year-old girl, taking care of me. She smiles at me and caresses my face. She says I'm going to be okay and calls me grandpa, but I know that is not my name. Immediately, she leaves the room and I return to the window of my room to see if, this time, Lines arrives for us to have another coffee. The punishment that, once, was delight is the perennial anguish for a soul that lies trapped inside me, a fallacious someone who ceased to be and, yet, still walks, endures, and binds me to the most faithful obsession, only my mind desired her so much that it made her plausible and possible within its walls, without her being able to escape into the third dimension. Everyone and everything has rotted while she flourishes in my temples, but this time, I am conscious that she is not here, she has not arrived, she comes late. I still wait for her sitting, sleeping, or walking, waiting for her to return the nerve, the ambiguous emotion, the weariness of forgiving the resentment with the life that I forget and that causes me despair every time it puts me in front of a person who cries, begs me, and searches for lost answers in my eyes, as if trying to infer if there is anyone left inside me.
Yes there is... There she is... Do you see her? She lives there... I remember her... She is the only one who dwells and delays in returning to recognize her. I have not forgotten her, because... I do not miss her. I know that if I missed her it would be because she has ceased to be, but she is still out there, behind the window, a little further from this table I occupy and that holds me impatient, now patient of all the forgetfulness, next to a cup full of cold coffee.
