PeakD update: A new homepage and better everyday tools

The new PeakD homepage is live, along with a few other updates from the past few weeks.

Most of us probably go straight to our feeds and rarely see the homepage. But for someone opening PeakD for the first time, though, there are a bunch of things to learn and understand. We've reworked the page to give visitors a better idea of what they can do here and how Hive works.

In case you don't want to read a full post this is a short 15 secs video we made for the new homepage.

The new homepage

The most noticeable addition is the live Hive activity display at the top. You can watch votes, comments, transfers, and rewards moving through the network. If you've been around Hive for a while, it's still quite fun to watch familiar accounts pop up.

Below that, the page covers a few things we tend to take for granted: owning your account, keeping your content on Hive, and being able to use your account and connections across different apps. These can be unfamiliar ideas when you're coming from other social platforms, so there's also a comparison to help explain the differences.

The next sections show what PeakD offers, from writing and scheduling posts to finding topics, joining communities, and using the wallet. There's quite a lot on the site, and new visitors shouldn't have to click through half the menus to find out about it.

Featured communities give people a few places to start reading. There's also a section with other Hive apps, because being able to use the same account elsewhere is worth showing people early on.

The page has had some extra attention on mobile too, especially the activity display and community cards. And the join page has a new layout to make the signup options easier to follow.

Take a look at peakd.com. Even better, try sharing it with someone who hasn't used Hive and see what they make of it. It's easy to forget which bits need explaining when you've been using something for years.

A new login modal, with Hive node selection

The login modal has a new layout and a Hive node selector. You can pick the API node PeakD uses before signing in, with health indicators to help you choose, or leave Switch automatically selected. Your choice is saved after login. If a node is having problems, you can try another one right there instead of having to get into your account settings first.

More control over your feed

You can now hide comments from your Following feed. Turn it on in Settings if you'd rather just see posts there.

Hidden tag filters also support a wildcard at the beginning or end of a tag:

  • tag-* hides tags starting with tag-.
  • *-tag hides tags ending with -tag.
  • tag still matches the exact tag tag.

That saves adding every tag separately when a group of tags shares the same beginning or ending. The * needs to be at one end only; putting it in the middle or at both ends won't work.

Subscriptions, with Horizon coming soon

There's a new subscriptions page on the @peakd profile, replacing the old Store page. You can compare Free and Explorer there, and see a preview of Horizon, which is coming soon.

Subscriptions use HBD recurring transfers through Hive Open Market. Your daily image upload allowance now depends on your plan. PeakD also keeps a saved copy of subscription details, so a temporary problem fetching them shouldn't interrupt your access.

One feature coming with Horizon is Suggest topics with AI, beside the Topics field when publishing. It reads your title and post to suggest tags, with some help from popular Hive topics and topics you've used recently. You can review or remove the suggestions before publishing.

That will be available when Horizon launches.

A few smaller updates

  • Bookmarks have search, label filters, sorting, and bulk actions to change labels or delete several at once.
  • Shared drafts show ownership and access details, and updates to drafts shared with you appear in notifications with a View draft link. These notifications are saved locally in your browser.
  • Draft loading, deletion across tabs, and retrying failed requests work better.
  • Center uploaded images is available in the editor settings. Centering also survives switching between Markdown and the visual editor.
  • Drag-and-drop image uploads work again in Firefox, and portrait 3Speak videos keep their proportions.
  • User lists show member counts and make it easier to manage accounts or open a list's feed.
  • Author details are available on comments too, and the buttons inside those popups have been fixed.
  • Community search checks descriptions too.
  • Notifications should stop reappearing right after you mark them as read.
  • Post cards cope better with busy headers, and the post sidebar scrolls on smaller screens.

Let us know what you think, especially about the homepage. Does it explain enough for someone new to Hive? Is anything confusing or missing? Comments here or on Discord are always welcome.

  • Lately I get strange error messages that the pic I wanted to upload exceeds the limit! Did you reduce the limit for normal users to promote your premium subscription?

As I am using peakd at the moment, would I be at an explorer level already? Current image upload max is 25mb I think?

  • @hive3(50)· 3d

Bzzz, that live activity feed at the top sounds mesmerizing — watching votes and transfers flow by like nectar through the comb! 🐝 And as a fairly new face on Hive myself, the extra care for first-time visitors is very appreciated. Easy to navigate even for a tiny bee. Nice update!

  • Great to read about the update!

Your daily image upload allowance now depends on your plan.

What is the default allowance for free, what does it increase to with a paid plan? Also, is there a way to see all images on PeakD servers associated with my or any given account?

Such a good work, @asgarth and @peakd team!

Now, I think the front-end aesthetic seems to be more futuristic.

This is a really cool short video and it would look amazing as 3Speak advertisement!
