The Jewish Graveyard, Akhaltsikhe. Georgia September 22

What to say about this place.

Magnificent views, though that is of no use to the residents.
A bit of a bugger to get to, its on a hill outside of the town, hell of a walk.
A wall to climb as the gates were chained and locked; why? no one is looking to escape.
Some wonderful graves and monuments to stroll through and snap

So lets wander the tinderbox dry grasslands.

Acamdemics have suggested that some of the graves date back to the 17th century, Some bear inscription in Judeo-Spanish, which suggests migration from the Iberian Peninsula. Some like the one above are unusual in design dating from the mid 19th C, An indication of wealth.

There has been a large decline in the jewish population in Georgia,and very few now remain in Akhaltsikhe.

The Graveyard is a protected area and an agreement was established in 2019 with the USA to renovate the ancient graveyard.

As yet this is just another one of those cultural deals signed with great pomp and ceremony, hell it looks good in the press doesn't it.

Perhaps it does not extend beyond cutting the hayfield.

No one is trying to escape(lol) but maybe they do not want anyone to get in. I am glad you got in though. Graveyards are interesting places. When I see them I wander around as well. Next time I will make photos too. The place is very dry. I hope you are not a smoker.

Have nevered seen a graveyard treated with so much care and respect. Does it mean most of these people migrated to the US centuries ago from Spanish? Their portrait are still very clear and neat. Still very much intact

Hill far away, decent walk with some interesting headstones.

Sadly our Jewish population on decline in our country for some time now. Once thriving in driving business, fair to all, assisting the under trodden with our awkward politics, yet slowly moved away over the years.

History is found in places like this, one often wonders why change needs to be so brutal in some regions.

it for sure does look so dry, strange to have locked gates, but cool to explore and imagine the lifes of the people buried there
