Hello, cinema fans. We’re back with another fun and pretty funny movie from my era (it was literally released the very year I was born). A movie that many won’t remember, even though it may have inspired one of the best sports-comedy films we saw two decades ago. The Waterboy was directed by Frank Coraci and starred Adam Sandler (who also co-wrote the screenplay), Kathy Bates, Fairuza Balk, Henry Winkler, and others. Check out one of the first sports-comedy movies I ever saw.

Plot
The movie opens by showing us an American football team practicing at the University of Louisiana, where we see a man walk onto the field wearing a very peculiar water-based outfit. As soon as he arrives, he’s greeted by a football hitting him in the face—a clear example of the constant mistreatment he receives from the team. Even so, he keeps showing up every day and serves as the “water boy” even though nobody wants him there. That same day, the team’s coach, Red Beulieu, calls him in and fires him, causing our clumsy, stuttering protagonist, Bobby Boucher, to return home, where he lives alone with his overprotective mother.

Before anyone had even thought of making the famous American football movie known as The Longest Yard, Adam Sandler had already starred in a sports movie of this same style in the late ’90s. The Waterboy is one of those Adam Sandler movies that I barely remembered seeing when I was a kid until I managed to read or watch something about it. Maybe it’s because I remember watching the other movie that came out that same year—The Wedding Singer—more than the one I’m talking about today.
I’m not saying The Waterboy isn’t entertaining—far from it. In fact, until recently, when I watched it for the last time, I hadn’t realized just how funny this sports-comedy movie is. One thing Adam Sandler does well—aside from making us laugh—is playing American football, and those of us who are true fans of his acting know that. This movie is a perfect example of that, especially since it has become, over time, a cult classic for an entire generation—my generation.
Antes de que siquiera se pensara en realizar la famosa película de fútbol americano conocida como The Longest Yard, Adam Sandler ya había participado como protagonista en una película de deportes de este mismo estilo a finales de los años 90. The Waterboy es una de esas películas de Adam Sandler que casi ni recordaba haberla visto cuando era pequeño hasta que conseguí leer o ver algo de la misma. Tal vez y sea porque recuerdo haber visto más la otra película que se había estrenado ese mismo año llamado The Wedding Singer que esta que les traigo hoy.
No digo que The Waterboy no sea entretenido ni mucho menos, es más, hasta hace poco que la llegué a ver por última vez no me había dado cuenta de lo divertida que es esta película de deportes y comedia. Algo que hace bien Adam Sandler, aparte de hacernos reír, es el jugar fútbol americano y eso lo sabemos los que somos verdaderos fanáticos de su trabajo actoral. Esta película es un ejemplo perfecto de ello, sobre todo porque se ha convertido con el tiempo en una cinta de culto de toda una generación, mi generación.

Sure, I’m more on the romantic and musical side of this generation, whose benchmark is The Wedding Singer. But I’m not going to deny my fondness for the few sports movies Adam Sandler has starred in throughout his career—they’re among the few sports movies I actually enjoy watching. Because, yes, I’m not a big fan of sports in general. The things that many people love to watch and talk about—like soccer, baseball, and so on—aren’t sports that particularly catch my attention.
Even so, I found this American football movie quite entertaining, thanks to the script and performance by the great Adam Sandler. And those of us who are familiar with his work as a comedian and actor know very well how he hooks us with stories and characters that are very hard to ignore. Yes, it’s funny that I’m saying this after mentioning above that I barely even remembered this movie existed. However, one thing I’ve never forgotten is Sandler’s leading role in this film.
Claro, yo soy más del lado romántico y musical de esta generación, cuyo referente es The Wedding Singer. Pero tampoco voy a negar mis gustos por las pocas películas de deportes que Adam Sandler ha protagonizado en su carrera, siendo estas de las pocas películas de deportes que me gustan ver. Porque sí, no soy un gran fan del deporte en general. Aquello que a mucha gente le fascina ver y hablar como lo es el fútbol, el béisbol y demás, no son medios de entrenamiento que me llamen la atención en particular.
Aún así, me entretuvo bastante esta película de fútbol americano ya que cuenta con un guión y una actuación realizadas por el gran Adam Sandler. Y los que conocemos bien su trabajo como comediante y actor sabemos muy bien cómo él nos engancha con historias y personajes que son muy difíciles de ignorar. Si, es curioso que diga esto último luego de haber dicho arriba que casi ni recordaba la existencia de esta película. Sin embargo, algo que no se me ha olvidado nunca es el papel protagónico que tiene Sandler aquí.

Here we see Adam Sandler playing a man in his 30s who still lives with his mother; he stutters, is shy, has no friends, and his only passion is working as a “water boy” at American football games. At first, we see this character named Bobby Boucher as the butt of everyone’s jokes, the laughingstock of the place, until he gets fired and has no choice but to look for another place that needs his services as a water boy. Fortunately for him, he finds a depressed and slightly unhinged coach with a completely useless football team.
From here on, the joke of it all is watching our thirty-something protagonist go from being the typical water boy everyone makes fun of to suddenly becoming the team’s most valuable player. It’s really funny to see this whole turnaround unfold in the main part of the movie. Especially because watching Adam Sandler play Bobby Boucher is pretty funny, but the funniest part is seeing how he manages to play American football even though he’s never had any real training in the sport—he was just handing out clean water to the players.
Aquí vemos a un Adam Sandler actuar de un hombre de más de 30 años que vive aún con su madre, es tartamudo, tímido, sin amigos y que su única pasión es trabajar como “aguador” en partidos de fútbol americano. Al principio vemos a este personaje llamado Bobby Boucher como la burla, el hazmerreír del lugar hasta que lo despiden y no le queda de otra que buscar otro lugar donde necesiten de sus servicios como aguador. Afortunadamente para él encuentra un entrenador deprimido y un poco tostado de la cabeza con un equipo de fútbol americano completamente inútil.
A partir de aquí vemos que el chiste de todo esto es ver cómo nuestro protagonista treintañero pasa de ser el típico aguador al cual todo el mundo se burla de él a convertirse de repente en el miembro más útil del equipo. Es muy divertido ver cómo sucede todo este giro en la parte principal de la película. Sobre todo porque ver a Adam Sandler actuar como Bobby Boucher es bastante gracioso, pero lo más gracioso es ver cómo logra jugar fútbol americano aún cuando nunca ha tenido un entrenamiento como tal en dicho deporte por solo estar repartiendo agua limpia a los jugadores.

But the funniest part is seeing how not only does the protagonist take on the irony and absurdity, but the entire football team Bobby ends up on turns into a group of useless, good-for-nothing players with rather peculiar personalities. For example, there’s the team’s coach, Klein, whom we meet as an older man with serious mental health issues. The fact that his team has been losing for so long obviously doesn’t help matters either.
However, our protagonist’s talent for tackling his opponents—which you can imagine stems from all the taunts he’s endured in his life—leads them to victory in every game they play during this hour-and-a-half-long movie. However, his personal problems—such as his dependence on his overprotective mother—prevent him from continuing to do what he wants most, which is nothing more than going to school and playing football. But anyway, I suppose the heart of the nonsense in this plot centers on the mother.
Pero lo más gracioso es ver cómo no sólo la ironía y el sinsentido se lo lleva el protagonista, sino que todo el equipo de fútbol americano con el que termina Bobby se vuelven un grupo de inútiles y buenos para nada con personalidades bastante particulares. Por ejemplo, tenemos al entrenador de este equipo llamado Klein quien lo conocemos siendo un hombre mayor con serios problemas mentales. La inutilidad de su equipo que ha estado perdiendo durante mucho tiempo tampoco ayuda a que mejore evidentemente.
Sin embargo, el talento que tiene nuestro protagonista de poder taclear a sus oponentes al imaginarte todas las burlas que ha recibido en su vida los lleva a la victoria en cada partido en el que juegan en esta hora y media de película. Sin embargo, sus problemas personales como la dependencia que tiene con su madre sobreprotectora no lo deja seguir haciendo lo que más desea, que no es nada más allá que ir a la escuela y jugar fútbol americano. At first, the mother is just another notable and rather unique character in the film, but as the minutes go by, we see her gradually become the typical obstacle standing in the way of the protagonist’s dreams. Being overprotective, she deceives our dependent and immature Bobby Boucher. I suppose the point of this whole entertaining story is how a stuttering man in his thirties—who’s been forbidden from talking to women since childhood—manages to fulfill his dreams and find happiness by sticking to his principles. The good thing about this movie is that it has a mature sense of humor that isn’t as heavy-handed as in other films.
La madre empieza siendo un personaje destacable más y bastante particular de la película al principio, pero con el paso de los minutos vemos que va convirtiéndose en el típico obstáculo del protagonista de conseguir realizar sus sueños. Al ser sobreprotectora, su madre engaña a nuestro dependiente e inmaduro Bobby Boucher. Pero bueno, como es de esperarse, la película termina con un notable giro de trama, un enfrentamiento, una decaída y una revelación final con reconciliación. Este es otro detalle que tiene esta película y es la cantidad de clichés típicos que posee su trama.
Obviamente el protagonista no deja de resaltar tanto por su personalidad como también por las cosas que dice y hace. Es interesante ver cómo Bobby Boucher se convierte poco a poco en un jugador de fútbol americano con tantos defectos y tantos problemas en su vida. Supongo que el objetivo de toda esta entretenida historia es la manera en la que un treintañero y tartamudo que le han prohibido hablar con mujeres desde niño logra cumplir con sus sueños y ser feliz siguiendo sus principios. Lo bueno de esta película es que tiene un humor para adultos que no es tan pesado como otras.

It has its jokes, absurd moments, and suggestive, double-entendre humor. But the great thing about this movie is that the main character is a “virgin”—meaning he has that “innocence” that most other movies lack entirely. And well, as for the ending, I really liked the twist with the game and how it all wrapped up with our protagonist becoming a sort of semi-professional football player. But hey, it’s an Adam Sandler comedy, so it’s not worth trying to find any deeper meaning in it.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the film’s audiovisual aspects. Directed by the same person who brought us The Wedding Singer, we can see similarities in the directing style, shots, cinematography, visual effects, motion effects, transitions, and so on. Since it’s a sports movie, the artistic and audiovisual direction focuses more on the games, but otherwise it’s not too bad. The sound effects are also well-integrated, but the soundtrack—featuring songs from the ’70s and ’80s—is top-notch.
Personally, I give it a 7/10 rating as far as the comedy and sports genres are concerned.

Pero lo bueno de esta película es que el protagonista es “virgen”, es decir que tiene esa “inocencia” que en la mayoría de otras películas NO tiene en lo absoluto. Y bueno, en cuanto a su final me gustó mucho el giro que tuvo con el partido y cómo terminó todo con nuestro protagonista volviéndose una especie de jugador de fútbol americano semiprofesional. Pero bueno, es una película de comedia de Adam Sandler, así que no vale la pena buscarle algún sentido a la misma.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Dirigida por el mismo que nos trajo The Wedding Singer, podemos notar una similitud en la forma de dirigir, planos, fotografías, efectos visuales, efectos de movimiento, transiciones y demás. Como es una película de deportes la dirección artística y audiovisual se enfoca más en los partidos, pero de resto no está tan mal. Los efectos de sonido igualmente están bien agregados, pero la banda sonora con canciones de los años 70 y 80 son de lo mejor.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y deportes.
