Out of those choices we make without giving it much thought, one caught my attention—one that has become one of my favorites. Its most recent season left me delighted and eager for the fifth and final season to arrive soon.
The Legend of Vox Machina
I should start by clarifying that this is a Western animated series produced in the United States, so it’s not an anime. Also, it’s rated for audiences 16 and older because it’s quite explicit and features profanity—though, ironically, that’s part of the show’s humor.
That said, the series revolves around the adventures of a group of seven misfit mercenaries who are more interested in easy money and beer than anything else.
We’re never told how, where, or when they got together; the first thing we see is the group in a tavern trying to figure out how to pay for some beers, since they’re broke. There they hear that the kingdom needs someone to defend it against a new threat, so they go to the palace to offer their services—more for the money than out of heroism. But as the series progresses, this rowdy group matures, and in addition to defending the kingdom, they begin to resolve their personal conflicts.
Of its four seasons so far, the first is, we could say, the weakest; there we see the group dealing with minor issues, but we could say that it was the beginning—or the test of whether this animated series would succeed or not. Then the other three seasons immerse us more deeply in confrontations with more powerful enemies, who are often directly connected to the central characters.
The Legend of Vox Machina* is inspired by the game Dungeons & Dragons and strikes a balance between adult comedy, fantasy, epic battles, and character development; as I mentioned, throughout the series we get to know the characters better, and, personally, some of them even exasperated me at times, because they seemed unable to see beyond their own noses and became selfish individuals who thought of nothing but their own pain or interests.
In fact, the characters are one of the strengths of this animated series: there are two half-elf twins, a barbarian, two gnomes (a bard and a cleric), a half-elf druid, and a human noble who is an inventor. This group, despite their many differences in interests and personalities, becomes a close-knit band of friends.
Another of its strengths is its battles, which sometimes arise out of nowhere or from supposed plans that, for the most part, never turn out as expected. These fights are dynamic and creative; in them, the characters use their skills (spells, stealth, brute force, shooting, among others), managing to coordinate their efforts to achieve their goals or, failing that, escape danger and regroup.
As an animated series for adults, in addition to its explicit content—which goes beyond mere sexual references and scenes—the battles hold nothing back. There are broken bones, bloodshed, and terrifying monsters that heighten the sense of danger in every adventure.
Music plays a key role in this series; since one of the main characters is a bard, there’s no shortage of songs—many of which are obscene, while others become integral to the battles.
But even with the humor and obscene songs, the drama never fades, as the plot twists take us from moments of humor to psychological horror and profound sadness.
As for the animation, it’s smooth, with great character design and dynamic, bloody combat sequences; I particularly love the animations in the opening and ending sequences.
Finally, although this last season focused more on the esoteric—on an enemy that tests not only the group’s unity after a split but also their personal beliefs—it leaves us with a heart-wrenching final episode featuring the disappearance of my favorite character. I give this animated series a 90/100.

De sus hasta ahora cuatro temporadas, la primera es, podemos decir, la más floja; allí vemos al grupo resolviendo asuntos menores, pero podríamos decir que era el comienzo o la prueba de si esta serie animada tendría éxito o no. Luego las otras tres nos sumergen más en enfrentamientos con enemigos más poderosos y que muchas veces tienen relación directa con los personajes centrales.

Este grupo, aunque con muchas diferencias en interés y formas de ser, se convierte en una banda unida de amigos.
Otro de sus puntos fuertes son sus batallas, las cuales a veces surgen de la nada o de los supuestos planes que en su mayoría nunca resultan como se esperaba. Estos combates son dinámicos y creativos, en ellos los personajes utilizan sus habilidades (conjuros, sigilo, fuerza bruta, disparos, entre otros), logrando coordinarse para lograr sus metas o en su defecto, escapar del peligro y reorganizarse.
Al ser una serie animada para adultos, además de lo explícito, que va más allá de menciones y escenas sexuales, en los combates no se guardan nada. Hay fracturas, derrames de sangre y monstruos espantosos que aumentan la percepción del riesgo que se corre en cada aventura.
La música es un punto importante en esta serie, ya que, al ser uno de los personajes principales un bardo, no faltan las canciones en ella, las cuales muchas veces son obscenas y en otras pueden formar parte de las batallas.
Pero no por haber humor y canciones obscenas deja de estar presente el drama, ya que podemos ver giros en la trama que saltan de momentos de humor a horror psicológico y tristeza profunda.
En cuanto a su animación, podemos hablar de fluidez, el diseño de los personajes y las secuencias de combate dinámicas y sangrientas; a mí particularmente me encantan las animaciones de los opening y ending.
Ya para finalizar, aunque esta última temporada se centró más en lo esotérico, en un enemigo que pone a prueba no solo la unión del grupo tras una separación, también sus creencias personales, nos deja un capítulo final desgarrador con la desaparición de mi personaje favorito.
