[Movie] Man of God

Some people leave home to escape the life they were raised in, only to discover that the things they ran from are still influencing the choices they make. That is the kind of conflict Man of God explores through Samuel Obalolu that was acted by Akah Nnani, the son of a strict, deeply religious preacher, Prophet Josiah Obalolu acted by Jude Chukwuka.

Growing up under his father's rigid religious expectations leaves Samuel questioning the faith he has been taught. When he leaves home for university, he embraces a different lifestyle, one that gives him the freedom he feels he never had but freedom comes with its own complications.

Samuel's university years introduced him to relationships, friendships and decisions that shaped the direction of his life. He developed feelings for Joy acted by Atlanta Bridget Johnson, while his childhood friend Teju acted by Osas Ighodaro remains an important part of his world. Rekya acted by Dorcas Shola Fapson, another significant figure in his life, represented a different kind of influence altogether.

As the years pass, Samuel's choices begin to affect more than just himself. His relationships become complicated, his personal ambitions clash with his beliefs, and his connection to religion takes an unexpected direction. The film follows his journey through heartbreak, marriage, ministry and the temptation to use the very faith he once rejected as a means of gaining wealth and status.

What makes the story interesting is that Samuel is not simply a man who lost his way overnight. It was obvious how disappointment, resentment, personal desires and unresolved issues from childhood gradually shape his decisions. His story also raises questions about whether a person can genuinely separate their identity from the environment that formed them.

I found the contrast between Samuel's father's strict approach to religion and Samuel's later relationship with faith particularly worth examining. The movie kind of invites we viewers to consider the difference between being raised in religion, genuinely understanding its values and actually living by them.

Akah Nnani carried the lead role, while Osas Ighodaro brought emotional depth to Teju's complicated position in Samuel's life. Dorcas Shola Fapson added another dimension through Rekya, and the supporting cast, which includes Olumide Oworu as Samuel's brother Daniel, helped connect Samuel's personal struggles to his family background.

The 2022 Netflix movie directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and written by Shola Dada, kind of draw inspiration from the biblical story of the prodigal son, but placed it in a contemporary Nigerian setting. Its strongest idea is the tension between outward religious identity and private behaviour. However, the story sometimes moves too quickly through major life changes, leaving certain relationships and emotional developments that needed more depth.

For me, Man of God raises an important question which is "Can someone truly find their way back to what they believe in when their relationship with it has been shaped by resentment, disappointment and personal gain?"

It's worth watching if you enjoy dramas that explore faith, family, relationships and the complicated ways our upbringing follows us into adulthood and trust Bimbola Austen-Peters to give great movie production.
