It's been ages since I last watched a movie—I just haven't had much time for that. I recently got the chance to sign up for Netflix, and I'm making the most of it by watching the occasional series. I also want to watch some new movies. Today, I took some time off in the afternoon to watch this movie with my son. It's called “The Last House,” and it's a pretty unusual movie—maybe interesting—but at the same time, I feel like I didn't quite understand the plot.

The movie looks like a horror film, but I’d say it’s more of a thriller. In this story, we meet the Delgado family—father, mother, children, and pets. They’ve planned to leave the house, but suddenly none of the doors or windows will open, and it’s not just them who can’t get out—their neighbors are stuck inside too… In this movie, we’ll see how, over time, this family manages to survive extreme situations—like a lack of food and medicine—inside their own home. It’s a movie that reminds me a lot of the COVID era, but a thousand times worse, since here they couldn’t even go out to buy food or at least order delivery.

I won’t lie to you—I love the premise of a family trapped inside their home because of an imminent danger outside. For some reason, I’ve always loved that kind of plot; even as a kid, I used to build a huge house out of Legos and stuff lots of little toys inside so they’d be “safe” from some imaginary catastrophe, hahaha, so the movie hooked me right away. For me, seeing them locked up at home and “safe”—as safe as they could be—was very satisfying, but it’s pretty unsettling to know that they’re trying to break the windows and it’s impossible to open them. I really hoped for an explanation for that, but I never understood what the point was of keeping people locked up or how they managed to do that.

At one point in the movie, we see some creatures that look like octopuses, but more misshapen—they’re really strange and seem to kill in seconds. They’re the only ones with the power to open doors. It’s crazy, but later in the movie, they also mention sea creatures, and it’s finally confirmed that they are, in fact, sea creatures when one of them enters the house and turns fresh water into salt water.

It’s also interesting to see how they manage to overcome hunger and confinement, and although I liked the movie, I feel like it was missing something—the confusing plot involving those creatures didn’t quite convince me. They also mention a “woman of the rain” whom I NEVER saw; I think they fell a bit short in developing the story better, and even though the movie is almost two hours long, you have to figure out what’s going on based on the small hints they drop.

It's not the best movie in the world, but it's a decent way to pass the time; all in all, it's enjoyable at first. As I mentioned before, it's available on Netflix.
