The Blue Giant

He had already forgotten when the journey began, only remembering his past in random flashes of images. He remembered being separated from his family in that green forest, how he had cried the first nights in the laboratory, behind the glass curtain tinted blue by the lights.

"You will be the first, the very first to make such a long journey," a scientist told him, tapping the glass with his pencil.

Little by little, he learned the details of the mission, and something far more chilling. The planet, his planet, was destined to die, not in the coming days, not in the coming years, but not long enough to see his grandchildren's generation.

The weeks in the laboratory passed with constant injections and cuts to his body, meant to increase his lifespan and endurance, and training in hostile conditions. He learned quickly, he grew quickly, and little by little, he began to forget memories: memories of his family, of the jungle.

The scientists were perplexed by the changes in his body and the new adaptive functions of their experiment. His brain began to grow inside his skull, to the point of requiring artificial expansion. He was no longer the being who had entered, no longer that free creature. Thoughts transformed into ideas and reasoning. But despite all that, despite understanding and living as one of them, working on his own improvement and that of the ship alongside them, the scientists continued to treat him and remind him that he was just an experiment, one of no return, with the sole purpose of finding a similar planet. One just as blue and just as large, that would serve as an escape route for future generations.

On launch day, he was given a carefully orchestrated send-off, but always cold, always distant. He spent the first few years inert in one of the ship's chambers until he awoke with the feeling that the journey had only just begun. Planets passed around him, the stars began to change, and the journey continued.

The days passed, and after watching them go by, he reached his destination. Through the hatch, he saw the almost spherical shape, the dense, completely white clouds, and beneath that layer of clouds, blue, the purest blue he could remember. After a forced landing, he found himself in the middle of the new planet, a verdant jungle teeming with life. A jungle that reminded him of home, and for a moment he forgot the horrors of the laboratory. Two buttons gleamed on his wrist: Habitable / Uninhabitable.

"I'm sorry," he thought. "They won't do the same to him; this planet will always be blue."

In the Earth laboratory, only the message "Uninhabitable" was displayed on the large screen under red lights. The research continued, and in just a few months, everyone had forgotten about that crew member of an inferior species.

Ya había olvidado cuándo comenzó el viaje, solo recordaba en ráfagas de imágenes aleatorias su pasado. Recordaba cómo había sido separado de su familia en aquel bosque verde, recordaba cómo había llorado las primeras noches en el laboratorio, tras la cortina de cristal teñido con el azul de las luces.

-Serás el primero, el primero en hacer un viaje tan largo -le dijo un científico mientras golpeaba el cristal con su lápiz.

Poco a poco se enteró de los pormenores de la misión, y de algo mucho más escalofriante. El planeta, su planeta, estaba destinado a morir, no los siguientes días, no los siguientes años, pero no tanto como para ver la generación de sus nietos.

Las semanas en el laboratorio transcurrían entre los constantes pinchazos y cortes en su cuerpo con fin de aumentar su vida y la resistencia de su cuerpo, y los entrenamientos en condiciones hostiles. Aprendía rápido, crecía rápido, y poco a poco comenzó a olvidar recuerdos: recuerdos de su familia, de la selva.

Los científicos quedaron perplejos ante los cambios en el cuerpo y las nuevas funciones de adaptabilidad de su experimento. El cerebro comenzó a crecer dentro de su cráneo, a punto de necesitar una expansión artificial en su cráneo. Ya no era el ser que había entrado, ya no era aquella criatura libre. Los pensamientos se transformaron en ideas y razones. Pero a pesar de todo eso, a pesar de entender y de vivir como uno de ellos, de trabajar en su propia mejora y en la de la nave junto a ellos, los científicos seguían tratándolo y recordándole que era solo un experimento, uno sin retorno, con el único destino de encontrar un planeta igual. Uno igual de azul e igual de grande, que funcionara como escape a las futuras generaciones.

El día del despegue fue despedido con protocolo cuidado, pero siempre frío, siempre lejano. Pasó los primeros años inerte en una de las cámaras de la nave hasta que despertó con la sensación de que el viaje apenas comenzaba. Los planetas pasaron a su alrededor, las estrellas comenzaron a cambiar y el viaje continuaba.

Los días pasaron, y después de verlos pasar, llegó a su destino. Vio la forma casi esférica por la escotilla, vio las nubes densas completamente blancas, y bajo esa capa de nubes, azul, el azul más puro que podía recordar. Tras un forzoso aterrizaje se encontró en medio del nuevo planeta, lleno de verde, una selva espesa y llena de vida. Una selva que le recordó a su hogar y olvidó por un instante los horrores del laboratorio. En su muñeca brillaban dos botones: Habitable / No Habitable.

-Lo siento -pensó-. No le harán lo mismo, este planeta siempre será azul.

En el laboratorio terrestre solo se vio en la gran pantalla bajo luces rojas: No Habitable. Las investigaciones continuaron y en apenas meses todos habían olvidado a aquel tripulante de una especie inferior.
