How's it going, my friends at @fulldeportes? Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening! After the first game, played on October 12, which kicked off the Venezuelan baseball season with a matchup between Navegantes del Magallanes and Tiburones de La Guaira, in which the Sharks sank their teeth into Magallanes with a 10–6 victory, the second game arrived on Tuesday, October 13. It felt like we had gone to the movies to watch the exact same film because, that's right, Tiburones once again defeated the Turkish Ship by a score of 10–6. It's an almost unbelievable coincidence, but that's exactly what happened. Yesterday, October 14, Magallanes had no game scheduled, and their next matchup will be today against Tigres de Aragua.
Magallanes is once again starting the season with problems in its starting rotation. At least the team is hitting, but the pitching weaknesses are becoming apparent far too early. In this second game, pitcher Víctor Vargas got the start but had to leave the game in the very first inning after giving up three hits, four runs, and a walk. It was a terrible outing. He was then replaced by Luis Martínez, who managed to calm things down a little. However, in the third inning, Ángel Pérez took the mound and surrendered three more runs.
Magallanes tried to respond early, scoring one run in the second inning and three more in the third. But, just as in the first game, Tiburones' bullpen started making its moves and brought in Rafael Cova, who earned the win after pitching 1.1 innings. He was followed by a group of relievers who got the job done. I've noticed that in these first two matchups between Tiburones and Magallanes, the Sharks have reacted quickly to their opponents' pitching weaknesses. That ability to capitalize on opportunities and get out of difficult situations is precisely what has allowed them to win their first two games.
In just two games, Magallanes has allowed 20 hits and 20 runs. This isn't exactly unusual, as high-scoring games are quite common in our Venezuelan league. However, as a true Magallanes fan, I am concerned that the team is once again starting the season with serious issues on the mound. I lived through this scenario last season, and although we ultimately became champions, I wouldn't want to repeat that same agonizing experience; I want to see a fresher Magallanes this campaign. The season is just getting underway, but it is time to pay attention to the pitching if we want to avoid paying the price for these struggles later on.
