Preparations for the fair in Wertheim are currently in full swing again. But that also means it must already have been almost a whole month since my bike ride to Miltenberg to visit the fair there. It’s unbelievable how fast time seems to fly. Faster and faster—it feels like it’s always speeding up. It’s amazing how a leisurely stroll through town can help you slow down.

momentan laufen in Wertheim wieder die Vorbereitungen für die Kirmes auf Hochtouren. Das bedeutet aber auch, daß meine Fahrradtour nach Miltenberg auf die dortige Kirmes schon wieder fast einen ganzen Monat zurückliegen muß. Es ist unglaublich wie die Zeit zu rennen scheint. Schneller, gefühlt immer schneller. Wie entschleunigend da doch ein gemütlicher Stadtbummel wirken kann.
After taking a look around the fairgrounds, I took a short stroll through downtown Miltenberg, as I mentioned earlier. On my way, I passed the Catholic Church of St. James, which was built in the 13th century.

Nachdem ich den Festplatz der Kirmes in Augenschein genommen hatte, unternahm ich wie gesagt noch einen kurzen Stadtbummel durch die Innenstadt von Miltenberg. Dabei passierte ich die katholische Kirche St. Jakobus, die im 13. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde.
Here you can see the old and the new city hall. The old town hall, built of red sandstone quarried here in the region, has been documented since at least the end of the 14th century. While it was also used for trade back then, today it is primarily used for cultural events.

Hier seht ihr das alte und das neue Rathaus. Das alte Rathaus erbaut aus rotem Sandstein, der hier in der Region abgebaut wird, ist auf jeden Fall seit Ende des 14.Jahrhunderts aktenkundig. Während es damals auch für den Handel genutzt wurde, dient es heute vor allem für kulturelle Veranstaltungen.
When visiting Miltenberg, you certainly can’t miss taking a snapshot of the Schnatterloch, the old market square. This is also where Miltenberg’s most-photographed house is located. It’s a shame the sun didn’t quite cooperate. I would have liked a little more sunlight for the photos. But you can’t have everything.

Bei einem Besuch in Miltenberg darf natürlich eine Momentaufnahme vom Schnatterloch, dem alten Marktplatz, nicht fehlen. Hier befindet sich auch das wohlmeistfotografierte Haus Miltenbergs. Schade, daß die Sonne nicht ganz mitgespielt hat. Ich hätte gerne etwas mehr Sonnenlicht für die Fotos gehabt. Aber man kann eben auch nicht alles haben.
This house could actually be on Diagon Alley. Maybe Hermione and Harry just recently bought their new wands. ;-)

Dieses Haus könnte ja eigentlich auch in der Winkelgasse stehen. Womöglich könnten Hermine und Harry erst kürzlich ihren neuen Zauberstab erworben haben. ;-)
With its picturesque old town, Miltenberg is a particularly beautiful destination for a day trip. What also strikes me is that Miltenberg doesn’t seem to have quite as many vacant commercial properties as the neighboring towns. There are still more long-established businesses here. I almost feel as if I’ve been transported back in time.

Miltenberg ist mit seiner malerischen Altstadt ein ganz besonders schöner Zielort für einen Ausflug. Was mir zudem auffällt ist, daß wir in Miltenberg wohl nicht ganz so viel Leerstand bei den Gewerbeimmobilien zu haben scheinen wie in den Nachbarstädten. Hier gibt es noch mehr alteingesessene Geschäfte. Fast fühle ich mich ein wenig in die Vergangenheit zurückversetzt.

Direkt neben dem Rathaus ist das Bauamt zu finden.
Even though we’re having a lovely Indian summer here in Franconia—it’s supposed to get up to 28 degrees again—the approaching fall simply can’t be ignored anymore. It’s with a touch of melancholy that I look back on that beautiful bike ride to Miltenberg. Now the dark half of the year is coming soon, which I really don’t like at all. We’ll see how I get through it this time. I’m happy to stick around for fall, maybe with a productive mushroom hunt or two. As far as mushrooms go, it’s still dead quiet around here because it’s just way too dry. But that’s not unusual here. Autumn mushrooms usually start appearing around here after the Wertheim Fair, starting around mid-October. But by Christmas at the latest, I’d love to skip right over January and February. But life isn’t exactly a wish list. ;-)

Auch wenn wir hier in Franken einen schönen Altweibersommer haben - es soll noch mal bis zu 28 Grad warm werden - kann der nahende Herbst einfach nicht mehr übersehen werden. Nicht ohne Wehmut denke ich an die schöne Radtour nach Miltenberg zurück. Nun kommt bald die dunkle Jahreshälfte, die ich so gar nicht mag. Mal gucken, wie ich dieses mal durchkomme. Den Herbst nehme ich ja gerne noch mit, vielleicht mit der einen oder anderen ergiebigen Pilztour. Was die Pilze anbelangt, ist bei uns noch tote Hose, weil es einfach noch viel zu trocken ist. Aber das ist hier nicht ungewöhnlich. Die Herbstpilze starten bei uns meist nach der Wertheimer Messe, so ab Mitte Oktober. Aber spätestens nach Weihnachten würde ich gerne Januar und Februar überspringen. Aber das Leben ist eben auch kein Wunschkonzert. ;-)
