Greetings, everyone... welcome to my blog.
For this weekend’s movie selection, I decided to lean into a Halloween theme—though I didn’t choose anything terrifying, opting instead for something more fun or melancholic. While looking through my list of recommendations, I came across an older film that, like many others from the past, I had never actually seen: Corpse Bride.
The title might sound grim or chilling at first glance, but once you understand the context and the film’s overall tone, it becomes clear that this isn’t a gory, frightening horror story—the kind you might typically associate with Halloween.
Produced and directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson, this film was released in 2005. While its original title is Corpse Bride, it is known as La novia cadáver in Spain and El cadáver de la novia throughout the rest of Latin America. Tim Burton is well-known for his work on films such as Batman, Beetlejuice, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
This animated feature explores the old-fashioned custom of arranged marriages—unions between young people who didn’t even know each other, orchestrated solely for socio-economic convenience. A family of nouveaux riches agrees to an arranged marriage between their son and the daughter of an aristocratic couple who have fallen into financial ruin.
The two young people happen to meet before their formal introduction and fall in love at first sight. Later, while practicing his wedding vows, the nervous groom-to-be flees the scene; he ends up wandering through a desolate area, still trying to commit his vows to memory.
In the midst of his rehearsal, he acts out the moment by placing his fiancée’s ring onto what he assumes is a tree root—but which, in reality, turns out to be the hand of a deceased woman who was murdered by her own partner. The corpse, dressed as a bride, came to life—rising from beneath the ground—and declared that the young man had become her husband the moment he placed the ring on her finger.
This compelling story brings together two worlds—the realm of the living and the realm of the dead—which, despite being so distant, are also deeply intertwined. They serve as the backdrop for a love triangle that unfolds in a truly fascinating way, leading to a very interesting conclusion.
If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Although it is an animated production, it draws you in; as the story progresses, the situation becomes increasingly intriguing, leaving you eager to discover how such a complex knot will be untangled.
This is my recommendation for this Halloween weekend. Thanks for visiting my blog—happy Sunday, everyone!
