Hello to the @needleworkmonday sewing community! It’s a pleasure to greet you all—welcome back to my sewing blog. It’s been a while since I last shared a tutorial, but I’m back with a simple one. This time, I’ll be showing you how I reworked a swimsuit; after just five months of use—even though it was brand new when I got it—it stopped fitting me properly. Believe it or not, it was digging in painfully at the crotch, so I decided to remodel it—even though I’d only worn it once!
Foto de como me quedaba antes el traje de baño.
Here is a photo from the last time my family and I went on a trip, where I’m wearing this one-piece, athletic-style swimsuit with an open neckline. It really looked great on me, but when I tried to wear it again, it no longer fit—I suppose I must have gained a bit of weight! Since it doesn’t fit anymore, I’m going to give it a makeover and transform it so I can wear it again. I hope you like it!

Paso 01
Step 01
I started by cutting out the pieces for my swimsuit; this time, I’m making a simple two-piece set—a bikini bottom and a top with elastic straps. I cut each piece as a double layer, and for the bikini straps, I used a different fabric for the reinforcement—in this case, a white one.
Paso 02
Step 02
We now proceed to assemble the bikini. We begin by sewing each piece of the crotch area separately—both the lining and the outer layer—and then stitching the sides of each piece. Next, we join the pieces together at the crotch and along the top, while leaving the side sections open so that we can insert the fabric loops. The pieces should be sewn with the right sides facing inward, and a small opening must be left along the top edge to allow the pieces to be turned right-side out.
Paso 03
Step 03
Next, we sew on the loops and the bikini straps. We will attach four straps to the front piece and four loops to the back, which will hold the straps in place via a tie. To make the loops, we sew a long strip of fabric and then cut it into 3 cm segments. We place one loop at each corner—two on each side, one at the top and one at the bottom—and sew them on from the inside so that the stitching remains hidden; in this case, we use an invisible stitch to join the pieces.
Paso 04
Step 04
Now we will sew the top. I will sew the side seams for each piece—including the lining—and attach the straps, ensuring they are positioned correctly. Next, I will sew the bottom edge (where the elastic goes) using a straight stitch, followed by a zigzag stitch on the inside. Then, I will create a gathered effect at the center of the top, add a connecting piece in the middle, and finally, sew the straps over this area to reinforce them.
