Music is always part of our lives, but it’s also part of the lives of those around us. Our parents listen to music and, no doubt, when they were teenagers or young adults, they had a favourite singer or were fans of a particular singer or band. And it’s not just our parents, our siblings, grandparents, in short, our whole family.

In this case, and by way of example, I’ll tell you about my mum’s favourite artist. She has many favourite artists, almost all of whom sing in Spanish. Although many English-speaking artists and bands were popular during her youth, such as The Beatles, to give one example, she loved Argentine and Spanish singers. But there was one she was a huge fan of, so much so that she listened to him almost constantly whilst she was pregnant with me.

I love him so much because I grew up listening to his music, and to be honest, he’s my mum’s favourite singer, and the one I like best too. I love all his songs; he has a unique voice, and his lyrics are like poems, they rhyme, they’re romantic, but they also speak of everyday life and the pain of love.
What’s more, people used to call him a ‘gypsy’, and in his live performances, as well as in his recordings and on television programmes, he would dance, and he was brilliant at it. In fact, that kind of suggestive dancing was quite a novelty for that era. I think he hasn’t gained international recognition, which is why he isn’t very well known outside Argentina, or perhaps he is, but I’m not aware of it. The artist I’m talking about, and to whom I’m paying tribute today, is Sandro, also known as Sandro de América.
I had to select just a few of his songs as his official channel has so many. In his day, YouTube didn’t exist, so I’m glad to know he has an official channel, and although many of the videos only show a picture of him, mostly from his vinyl records, the sound quality is excellent.

Sandro also made lots of films, and the girls back then were mad about him, his dancing, his songs, his lyrics and the way he spoke made every woman fall in love with him. At his live performances, women would throw their underwear at him; it was madness. He appeared on lots of TV programmes and it was a pleasure to watch him; you never tire of his songs.
I remember that when I was a child and a teenager I used to listen to him and I had a cassette of his; I couldn’t stop listening to it. I’ll never tire of saying that his voice is beautiful, and what I like most about his lyrics is that they’re poems, and he sang with his soul, with incredible emotion. If you take the music away, it’s pure poetry. He used to sing his songs and I know almost all the lyrics; I know them by heart.

When he performed in my home town of Bahía Blanca, in the province of Buenos Aires, my mum went to see him, and I think it was the only concert she ever went to in Argentina, back at the start of Sandro’s career, when he was singing with a band called ‘Sandro y los de fuego’. I’m glad she had that experience, because seeing your favourite artist live is something special.
She had lots of Sandro’s vinyl records, which her parents used to buy for her. When she was 16, she came down with hepatitis and had to spend a month resting. As you can imagine, Sandro was all she had during that month, along with her vinyl records. She’s a huge fan of his. My grandfather travelled all the way to the capital especially to buy her every vinyl record he could find, and she then put together a scrapbook with the album covers.

The truth is, he was very handsome; he charmed people with his gaze and the way he spoke, and women simply melted for him. He had a certain charming mischievousness about him. At performances and concerts, he would wear a red dressing gown at the end of the show – it was something that became his trademark. He went by the name Sandro because his parents wanted to call him that, but the regulations didn’t allow it; his real name was Roberto Sanchéz. I think his iconic song was ‘Rosa Rosa’.
Sandro smoked all his life, and whilst that never affected his voice, it did destroy his lungs, causing an illness that meant he had to use an oxygen tube; yet despite this, he carried on singing right up until his death. He even had a system devised so that the oxygen would flow through the microphone he sang into. He continued to give concerts until his health deteriorated, and when he passed away, the whole of Argentina was in mourning.

Amonet.
Of course, I’m not including all of Sandro’s songs here, although there are many I simply can’t leave out, they’re brilliant. If you know Sandro, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
And so, here’s my suggestion for this month’s theme: to pay tribute, as I’ve done today, to an artist, a favourite singer of a family member, such as a mum or dad. It’s always personal experience that counts in the reviews in this community; I really value anecdotes, and in this case, those relating to the artist that family member is a fan of.
Thank you very much for joining me today; warm regards to you all. See you soon. Amonet.
