The Portinatx Trail and the Magic of Walking Alone
A few months ago, I was on this trail in Portinatx, on the island of Ibiza, on my way to the famous lighthouse in the north of the island.
It was a cloudy day, foreshadowing that season of heavy rains characteristic of the Balearic Islands and southern Spain as summer draws to a close or as fall is just beginning. Although the morning was gray, the temperature was simply perfect for enjoying a leisurely but long hike.
About 45 minutes from the small village of Portinatx lies the Moscarter Lighthouse, famous for being a highly sought-after destination among the hundreds of hiking trails the island offers.

Unlike other, more crowded routes, this stretch was quite deserted, though I was lucky enough to run into a few hikers along the way. This is something I always appreciate on my solo hikes: running into other people—even if it’s just one person or a couple of pairs along the entire route—brings me peace of mind. It makes me feel like I’m on the right path and, at the same time, reassures me that I’m safe. I know that if I ever need help, there’s someone else nearby, even if they’re a stranger.
The Landscape of the Pitiusas: Nature in Its Purest Form
Geographically, the trail offers a very distinctive view of the Pitiusas. I don’t know if you knew that among the four Balearic Islands, there are two that stand out from the rest because they are almost joined and share unique biogeographic characteristics: both have coniferous forests, something that Mallorca and Menorca do not have in the same way as their sister islands, Ibiza and Formentera.
The trail connecting the village of Portinatx with the Moscarter Lighthouse is a perfect example of the island’s natural beauty. It’s a nearly untouched trail, with very little human intervention. And while construction in the urban area of Portinatx has unfortunately impacted the natural landscape, just a 20-minute walk away you can feel yourself completely immersed in the heart of the island: far from it all, with the rustling of branches in the wind and the song of cicadas enjoying the summer just as much as you are.
This is a tour I recommend without hesitation, as it offers the perfect opportunity to disconnect from Ibiza’s usual pace, which tends to be very hectic regardless of whether you’re visiting the island for its nightlife or not.
That said, I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify that Ibiza isn’t just about partying; it has a deeply spiritual side that’s worth discovering, especially for those of us who love connecting with nature.
Arriving at the Moscarter Lighthouse: A Stunning Finale
The trail to the Moscarter Lighthouse invites you to immerse yourself in the silence and smile at the hues of the sky and the vegetation. Added to this is that sense of magic that occurs near the end of the trail, when you begin to catch a glimpse of the sea in the distance. The coast gradually draws nearer until, suddenly, the land takes an almost abrupt turn that leads directly to the lighthouse.
There it stands: towering imposingly, immaculate, marking the human presence amid the rocks, the wild vegetation, and the vastness of the Mediterranean Sea.
This was, without a doubt, one of my most transformative getaways in Ibiza. I hope that a little bit of this magic has also found its way into your heart through these words.
