Some films are background noise while others pull you into their story. Agesinkole also called King of Thieves is one of those that draws me in. I usually pick my films carefully. Yet sometimes a film shows how talent Nigeria has. Agesinkole is one of those films for me and Femi Adebayo deserves praise for his contribution.
The plot starts by showing Agesinkole a feared and almost unstoppable man. Agesinkoles arrival throws the community into panic. Agesinkole is violent ruthless and unpredictable. Even the protectors cannot stand against Agesinkole. Elders and powerful leaders try to solve the problem. Defeating Agesinkole is more difficult than anyone thought.
What struck me first was the movies atmosphere. From the start a constant sense that something terrible might happen hangs over the scene. Agesinkole is not a villain. Agesinkoles presence alone sends fear. Femi Adebayos portrayal makes Agesinkole truly intimidating.
Femi Adebayos performance is my takeaway from this film. Femi Adebayos disappears entirely into Agesinkole. Femi Adebayos mannerisms expressions look and sheer brutality make Agesinkole believable inside the story.
The production also deserves praise.
Costumes makeup set design locations and visual effects combine to create a Yoruba setting. I especially liked how the film uses Yoruba culture language and traditional elements without treating them as decoration. Those elements are essential to the story.
What made this film more interesting for me is that it offers more than violence.
At first it is easy to see Agesinkole as a man. Agesinkole hurts people spreads fear and seems without mercy. Yet as the story goes on we learn there is a history behind the man Agesinkole has become.
Agesinkoles actions do not become justified by the past. Knowing what shaped Agesinkole changes how we view Agesinkole.
This part of the story made me think about how people judge based on what they see. Sometimes there is a story behind anger bitterness or cruelty that we do not know.
The supporting cast also deserves credit. Actors like Odunlade Adekola Ibrahim Chatta and others contribute strongly to the experience. No one feels out of place. Their performances keep the story intense.
Sure Agesinkole is not flawless. Some moments make you question decisions or feel parts could have been handled differently. These flaws do not ruin the experience for me.
What I appreciated most is that the movie does not show fights bloodshed or action. Beneath all there is a story about pain betrayal revenge fear and the consequences of what people do to each other. Just when you think you have seen everything the story reminds you that more is ahead.
Yes there is a part two. After finishing this film I am genuinely curious how everything will unfold. I look forward to seeing where the story goes next. Agesinkole King of Thieves is a Yoruba epic, with performances production design and a story that leaves you thinking after the action ends.
