I finally watched Jagun Jagun. I can say for certain that this is not the type of epic you watch casually and then forget. In the heart of Jagun Jagun there is Gbotija, a man whose life changes dramatically after he loses his father. Gbotija’s determination to become a warrior leads him to Ogundiji, a feared warlord. What starts as a quest for knowledge and strength in Jagun Jagun turns into a bond between Ogundiji and Gbotija.
What grabbed my attention in Jagun Jagun was Gbotija’s transformation. Gbotija does not simply learn to fight and instantly become a warrior. In Jagun Jagun we see Gbotija grow step by step. Gbotija begins as a man looking for purpose. With training, experience and exposure Gbotija’s confidence rises. Soon Gbotija’s skills become impossible for those around Gbotija to ignore. That is where the real tension in Jagun Jagun starts.
Ogundiji is already a figure. Ogundiji has built Ogundiji’s name through warfare. People both. Fear Ogundiji in Jagun Jagun. Gbotija’s rapid growth brings something Ogundiji cannot fully control. In my view Ogundiji is the intriguing character in Jagun Jagun.
Ogundiji is not a villain who chooses evil one morning. Ogundiji’s character in Jagun Jagun shows how someone who has grown used to power can be swallowed by it. The more Ogundiji strives to keep Ogundiji’s position the destructive some of Ogundiji’s decisions become.
I also appreciated that Jagun Jagun does not make Gbotija’s journey about physical strength. Gbotija’s relationship with Ogundiji, the discoveries about Gbotija’s family and the people Gbotija meets along the way all help shape Gbotija’s growth in Jagun Jagun.
The fight scenes were a draw for me in Jagun Jagun. The film invested heavily in making the battles feel vast and dramatic. Costumes, makeup, locations, weapons and visual effects all helped recreate the era in Jagun Jagun. Some scenes truly gave me the sense of watching an epic, not just a film that tries to copy one.
Femi Adebayo added a presence to Ogundiji in Jagun Jagun. Ogundiji’s performance made Ogundiji feel intimidating even when he was not shouting or fighting. Every time Ogundiji appeared on screen in Jagun Jagun there was a seriousness. Lateef Adedimeji also portrayed Gbotija well. I especially enjoyed watching Gbotija evolve from a man into someone who could stand among warriors in Jagun Jagun.
At times I felt Jagun Jagun carried characters and subplots than needed. A few moments felt predictable especially when the film built toward revelations. Some scenes could have been tighter. I think a little more focus on the characters would have made Jagun Jagun even stronger. Still those issues did not ruin the experience for me.
What stayed with me after watching Jagun Jagun was not the fighting all. It was the message about power. You can spend years building an empire. You can destroy it yourself when pride, fear and the desire for control become more important than everything around you in Jagun Jagun.
That is what makes Ogundiji’s story in Jagun Jagun especially interesting. Ogundiji’s greatest battle is not always against another warrior. In ways it is, against Ogundiji’s own desire to stay in control. Overall I enjoyed Jagun Jagun. Jagun Jagun offers action, drama, ambition, betrayal, romance, impressive visuals and strong performances. Importantly Jagun Jagun shows that Nollywood can take on historical stories and give them the scale they deserve.
