Hello, people of the internet—how’s it going? Today I’ve decided to take part in this contest, as I sometimes do, by answering the usual two questions :3
Do you think society expects women to be strong all the time, even when they need support?
Actually, yes—when I worked as a nanny, I saw this all the time. My employer’s family would criticize her for having a nanny. The truth is, she didn’t have to clean or cook because she had a housekeeper, and she hired a nanny to look after the baby whenever she wasn’t around. But regardless of whether she had the means to pay for help so she wouldn’t get so exhausted—well, why not? After all, she was the one who had to stay up at night with the baby; if her husband could afford to pay for a nanny, why not do it?
I think these are judgments that come primarily from women of an older generation—now grandmothers, or mothers of women in their thirties—who, either because they didn’t have the opportunity or because hiring a nanny was even less common back then, make remarks like: "That’s not how I raised you," "So, what exactly do you do if you don’t clean, cook, or even raise your own child?" or "Why were women in the past able to manage a household and raise their children, but now they can’t?" It’s far more common than we might think.
Can a woman be happy with her life even if it doesn't look the way she once imagined?
I think that’s a difficult question. Depending on what someone’s life is like now—for instance, someone who might have envisioned a happy marriage but is instead trapped in a loveless one, or someone who aspired to a university career but couldn’t achieve it—they could only truly be happy if their life remains peaceful, even despite not having attained what they originally wanted.
