The gloomy, dark mansion is the very embodiment of the Usher family itself—fractured, decaying, and dark—for Edgar Allan Poe often used such settings to represent human torments: madness, despair, and death. The Usher family nears its end amidst delusions and ultimately sinks into the lake along with the house, thereby burying the dynasty; another striking detail is that the siblings and the house appear to be connected in some way, as whatever befalls them happens to the house, and vice versa.
La mansión lúgubre y oscura es la propia representación de la familia Usher en sí, está fracturada, decadente y oscura, y es que Edgar Allan Poe a menudo usaba este tipo de lugares para, de alguna manera, representar los tormentos humanos: la locura, la desesperación y la muerte. La familia Usher se acerca a su final en medio de delirios, y finalmente se hunde en el lago junto con la casa, enterrando así la dinastía, otra cosa que llama la atención es que los hermanos y la casa parecen conectados de alguna manera pues lo que les sucede a ellos le sucede a la casa y viceversa.
The decline of the house itself and the family serves as a representation of the toll that the terrible practice of inbreeding takes on people; many families resorted to this practice in an attempt to preserve their lineage, only to see it atrophy—with the mind suffering the most severe deterioration. Allan Poe knew exactly how to portray such situations: night terrors, torments, and deranged minds succumbing to madness and anxiety. It is an excellent story for passing the time while also reflecting on solitude, isolation, and the effects these can have on human beings.
Y es que el declive de la casa misma y de la familia no es sino la representación de lo que la terrible práctica de la endogamia le hace a las personas, muchas familias recurrieron a esta practica para tratar de preservar su linaje pero solo lo atrofiaron, en especial lo que más se deteriora es la mente, y Allan Poe sabía muy bien como retratar este tipo de situaciones: terrores nocturnos, tormentos, mentes desquiciadas que se dejan llevar por la locura, la ansiedad, en fin. Es un relato excelente para pasar el rato y al mismo tiempo reflexionar acerca de la soledad y el aislamiento, y lo que esto puede provocar en los seres humanos.
