A week ago, for the first time, I went to go see a documentary in theaters. I had heard about this movie in so many different places that I had to go check it out. I didn’t know anything about Elizabeth Holmes or Theranos prior to going to see the movie, but I’ve been obsessed with the story ever since. Very interesting how the trailer presents this documentary film and that’s somewhat the experience you get throughout this 3 hour documentary that flies by with all the drama in the film.

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of people talking about this movie by now, all with different opinions about what they got out of You Can See Everything. My personal opinion is that everyone involved the movie is out of their fucking minds in the most interesting and entertaining way imaginable. Elizabeth Holmes, her man Billy, and the director Nathan Fielder, all batshit crazy!

The movie follows Elizabeth Holmes's day to day life 34 days before going to prison for scamming investors out of hundreds of millions through her health tech startup Theranos. The movie focuses on her more as a person than the fraud, which what she presents is a version of herself very different than what she was portrayed to be during the rise and fall of Theranos.

In You Can See Everything Elizabeth comes off as a smart, ambitious, but naive woman who is a victim of bullying by the media who wants to see her in prison and a victim of the controlling men she chooses to date. Total opposite of the description of her given by whistleblowers who have worked with her personally, who say she’s a charismatic, super manipulative, tyrant. In the documentary she also presents herself to be less of a Steve Jobs clone and her voice is notably higher pitched compared to how you hear her speak in earlier recordings and news reports. But she still has those wide, never-blinking eyes, and that serial killer stare thing that she does. There isn’t a man alive that could beat her in a staring contest…

I also had no knowledge of Nathan Fielder before watching You Can See Everything or any of his previous films but apparently he’s known to be a bit of a wildcard that’s gonna do some off the wall stuff… However in this movie he starts off as the sinister live in interviewer who’s out to psycho analyze a notorious lier. He does this while coming off as a character that’s a cross between Thanos and Dr. Evil.

You can see that he has intentions of maintaining a level of realism and journalistic integrity but he goes through some changes and fights with himself throughout the movie after spending so much time with a master manipulator. A lot of the movie is hung up on the interpretation and use of a few words that completely changes how each person could view the main character, Elizabeth Holmes and her actions.

Throughout the movie he obviously develops a friendship and grows to care about Elizabeth Holmes despite her past mistakes. He does this while having conflict with Holmes’s mind reading, overly controlling asshole husband, Billy. He also has interesting exchanges with the actress that plays Holmes in the Hulu series The Dropout who completely twists the whole movie up in the second half, and almost becomes the voice of reason in a way.

In all, the characters and the story make for an insanely interesting mysterious train wreck that takes place over 3 hours. It doesn’t feel like 3 hour watching it, and I’m looking forward to watching You Can See Everything again after going down the Elizabeth Holmes Theranos rabbit hole a bit. I definitely had developed my own sympathetic opinions of her based on this documentary which have changed after looking into the story more but it’s just so interesting I can’t get away from the story and the characters involved. But overall, I rate the movie You Can See Everything

8.9/10

that three hour runtime really does fly by when a documentary gets that wild. it is fascinating how differently people can come across on screen compared to how whistleblowers describe them behind the scenes
