Imagine hiking a trail just to enjoy a sunny day and identify plant species while taking in beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. An "unofficial" trail called the Arriba Fóssil offers exactly that. Technically, it represents the most important succession of sedimentary rock strata in Western Europe—and it’s right here in Portugal. Would you believe me if I told you there are fossils from the Miocene period? What is that, exactly? ... Don't miss this post!🌿🏔️
Where would we have to go?📍🚩/ ¿A dónde tendríamos que ir?🌍📸
Since there is no official trail, you have to head down to the coast right by the cliff and walk southward; it is towards Cabo Espichel that you can see the fossil landscapes. It is a lovely experience if you enjoy hiking and want to break up the routine of visiting palaces and navigating Lisbon's confusing streets. You can get here by public transport or private vehicle, and you can rent a house near the beach to enjoy the seaside for a few days.📍🚩

Why is the walk so special?📍🚩/ Por que es tan especial la caminata?🌍📸
In terms of scenery, it isn't particularly striking, as this is a dune ecosystem; you won't see many green mountains, though there is some quite interesting vegetation worth highlighting. I photographed a few species to identify them and show you what manages to survive in a place consisting of nothing but sand and scarce rainfall.📍🗺️
It is the only dune ecosystem in Portugal that dates back over 20 million years. Although dinosaurs did not roam here—as the area was still forming at the time—one can find various fossils, including bivalves, sea urchins, gastropods, sharks, and fish from the Miocene epoch. To make the experience even more incredible, you can continue walking for about 15 km to Sesimbra, where you will find actual dinosaur tracks.📍🧭
Ecology📍🚩/ Ecologia 🌍📸
What I discovered about this group of species is their ability to grow in environments where other plants could not. Mosses play a key role in absorbing Atlantic moisture and salt, while other species possess roots with a unique capacity to anchor themselves in the dunes and avoid being completely buried by the sand. Together, these species form a protective barrier for the ecosystem located further inland.🧭📍
A view of the fossil zone📍🚩/ Una vista a la zona fosil 🌍📸
I don't think it's fair to associate the word "fossil" only with animals or plants! The term also applies because the formation is no longer subject to marine erosion; on the contrary, it is far removed from the ocean, meaning it is affected only by the wind and other environmental conditions. As I mentioned in another post and one of my videos, the ocean used to be right by that cliff, but now it is nearly a kilometer away. It’s a shame, because a large section collapsed recently due to heavy rains in Portugal.🧭📸🗺️

I wanted to take this opportunity to explain a bit about this dolmen, which is believed to date back to 3500 BC—making it, to give you an idea, much older than the pyramids of Egypt. It is shrouded in mystery and legend; although its primary functions were funerary and religious, some dolmens also served as natural solar observatories.📸🧭

A 20mio old trail implies that 20mio ago there were people hiking, but back then there was no bipedal walk yet :)
Also you didn´t show us any fossil!
Other than that, awesome post!
