There is no visible fortress structure remaining at this site—only ruins survive, though the entrance and sections of the walls can still be visited. It is one of the castles closest to the Spanish border and played a crucial military role.🧭🏆

Following the reconquests, the site was granted to the Knights Templar to repopulate the area and defend the Alentejo region against the Moors and Castile; the fortress was built between 1279 and 1325. As only ruins remained, the main entrance visible today dates back to the 17th century. It is currently open to visitors—and admission is free! You can visit at any time or day of the week, though do take care, as the area gets very hot in the summer.🌍🏞️

I came across a complete castle—not just ruins—but it turned out to be closed; I had arrived at lunchtime and would have had to wait two hours, which obviously wasn't feasible for me. My goal is to visit these sites, though that doesn't necessarily require going inside, as many castles in Portugal aren't open to the public. Still, it is a beautiful structure; construction began in 1350, making it one of the newer ones in this series of posts. It is interesting because what we see today isn't entirely original; the castle was modernized in the 16th and 17th centuries to serve as a prison.🚩🏰
Me topé con un castillo completo que no estaba en ruinas, pero se encontraba cerrado. Resulta que llegué a la hora del almuerzo y debía esperar dos horas; obviamente, no estaba en condiciones de hacer eso. Mi reto consiste en visitarlos, pero esto no exige entrar al interior, ya que muchos castillos en Portugal no están abiertos al público. This is my favorite one for today! Nisa Castle has Templar origins; when the famous Henry the Conqueror reclaimed the lands from the Moors, he granted Nisa to be repopulated by the French—who were also Templars and had aided Henry. That’s why it’s interesting that the name "Nisa" resembles that of the French city—pretty wild, right?📍🧭

Construction of the castle began in 1290 and took six years to complete; it played a crucial role in the Castilian defensive line. A woman told me that a section of the wall and a tower still remain, but that the Spanish destroyed the rest of the castle during a war of succession. I really liked the town—it has everything one needs, and at two in the afternoon, everything was still open, which is somewhat unusual for the Alentejo region.✈️🏔️
El castillo fue mandado a construir en 1290 y demoró seis años en terminarse. Cumplió un papel crucial en la línea defensiva frente a Castilla. Una señora me comentó que queda una sección de la muralla y una torre, ya que el resto del castillo fue destruido por los españoles en una guerra de sucesión. Me gustó muchísimo la villa: es muy completa y, a las dos de la tarde, todo estaba abierto, algo atípico en el Alentejo.🏰🚩

This is one of the most unusual castles I’ve had to research, as it no longer exists in its original form; instead, there is a private estate that preserves the keep. Built in 1169—making it quite ancient—it was conquered by Afonso Henriques. Later, between 1540 and 1542, it was transformed into a Renaissance palace by the Order of Christ. It is currently difficult to visit due to ongoing renovations on the estate, and I am not even sure if it will open to the public, though the original castle tower can still be seen from a distance.📍🧭

In my opinion, this castle boasts one of the best settings of them all! I really liked it, too, but there is one small detail... It was primarily a defensive fortress and was never the residence of a feudal lord; therefore, it doesn't quite fit the definition of what I am looking for. Even so, it can still be called a castle because it served a defensive function and dates back to the 12th century—specifically, 1199.🚙🏔️
En mi opinión, ¡este es el castillo que tiene uno de los mejores paisajes de todos! También me gustó mucho, pero tiene un pequeño detalle... Wow! This dinner was absolutely amazing. We spent about 70 euros, but it was worth every cent—the octopus and the Angus beef were incredible. If you're passing through, check out this restaurant called Portas do Ródão; they stay open late on weekends—which is a big deal in these remote villages where finding a late meal can be tough—and the service is top-notch!📍🚙
¡WOW! Esta cena fue demasiado buena. Gastamos unos 70 euros, pero valió cada céntimo; el pulpo y el angus estaban increíbles. Si pasan por aquí, visiten este restaurante, se llama Portas do Ródão.
