Aún no lo he pensado...
We’ve jumped from 91 to 98 castles! Technically, I’m only two castles away from finishing this three-year journey—covering over 11,000 kilometers. I’m really excited, as no one else is undertaking a feat like this—at least not by documenting every single castle digitally. What will happen when I reach 100? When I complete my cork map? I haven’t thought that far ahead yet... But I’ll likely finish visiting all the medieval castles in Portugal; that was always my goal.📸🧭

What do you think? While looking for information about this castle, I came across the fact that it’s being rebuilt. I initially thought, 'That’s great—the local authority is investing in cultural heritage monuments!' But it turns out they’re restoring it to turn it into a luxury hotel. I find this a bit disheartening; I don’t agree with privatizing castles. The government is always handing out money to people who don’t want to work—just 'in exchange for votes'—yet these fortresses, which tell our history, are being handed over to the private sector. I hope I’m mistaken, but that’s what I read online.📍🚩
Barbacena Castle dates back to the 13th century, during the era of the Reconquista, when it formed part of a defensive line designed to protect the Alentejo region from the Moors and the Castilians. Located near Elvas, the castle was restored in the 16th century; today, it lies in ruins, with its walls still standing.🚩📍
I’m not sure if you noticed, but the castles we’re seeing today are very close to the border with Spain. This one is a personal favorite—it’s quite beautiful and well-preserved, dating back to the 13th century, a period associated with the Reconquista. It was King Dinis who ordered its construction on the highest hill in the town. It’s located within the municipality of Campo Maior—which also has a castle that we’ll be visiting—and I absolutely loved how quiet and peaceful the village is, not to mention the panoramic views.📍🏔️
What struck me about this castle is that it is located in a rather isolated village—in fact, it lies less than 5 km from Spain, which makes it quite remote from the rest of the country. It is a 14th-century medieval fortress, commissioned by King Dinis. It is famous both as a site where coffee was once smuggled and for a tragic incident in the 18th century, when a lightning strike hit the keep, exploding the powder magazine and destroying a significant part of the town.📍🏰
One of the few to feature a central garden, it dates back to the 11th century, is of Islamic and medieval origin, and is located in the Algarve (TAVIRA)📍
It is unique in Portugal—dating back to the Arab period in the 12th century—and for this reason, it is one of the seven castles featured on the Portuguese flag (PADERNE)📍
The castle has a medieval Arab history; it was reconquered in 1240 and subsequently transformed into a coastal fortress, also located in the Algarve (CACELA)📍
This castle is the third-to-last one—with only two more to go before this vast, long-term project is complete. What we see today is a blend of several successive periods of occupation; these hills have been inhabited since the Neolithic era, through the times of the Romans, Visigoths, and Arabs, up to the era of the Reconquista—which is when this castle was built! Today, we can still see its foundations and a cistern. By the 15th century, it had lost its military significance and was completely abandoned📍🧭

Felicitaciones 👏👏
