Backup secured.

A little while back I made a post that I discovered my setup was not so solid and I started working on redundancy , took a little while but I got most of it sorted, the only thing left over was sorting out the os drive backup I was more or less ready for it but I was all out of disk slots so I would need to do something else, at the time I sort of left all that behind and moved on until recently I started looking into it again.

PXL_20260902_220339066.MP~2.jpg Pic of the server with the USB drive plugged in the back on a non slip mat thing for added safety 🤣

I really wanted something that would be super plug and play so If the os drive craps out I have a ready drive with the backup I put in and start the server like nothing happened.

I was looking into it and I settled on getting an enclosure but then I realized I would need a more fancy one to support the SAS drives the server uses... well the cheapest is 100 bucks just for a dang shell...

Well I was not feeling that I pay a 100 and don't even have a super elegant solution maybe can be a bit cheaper if I get something that would go in a pcie slot inside the server but I did not really want to bother with that either.

I just looked through some stuff and dug up an older 2 TB external drive it is just SATA but it should be fine for this new approach I went with instead.

So what I did was I made it so this drive can be both a boot disk with a recovery tool and also store backups of the OS, every 15 days it adds any changes to the backup and if my os drive fails, I just put in a fresh one boot from the external drive into the tool and copy the backup onto the fresh drive and boot.

image.png I also included it in my webdash and it's smart drive status ( PASSED that can tell you if a drive is having issues and is likely to crap out)

Not nearly as seamless and elegant as I would have liked but at least I now I have a full backup system and I was able to use stuff I already own without spending more money, and with the wild increase in prices for lots of computer stuff that is for the best 🤣

Ironically as I make this post, I got another drive flashing that is part of the raid, it is not dead but the SMART software is not feeling good about it's future, it is not a big deal and the system is made to handle such a failure, anyway I guess I will go replace the drive... I mean I did but used SAS drives but I am fine with that still a lot cheaper to replace and not the biggest headache with a server like this.
