Forget About Hive's many Problems. More Intelligent AI Models will be the final nail in the Coffin for the Entire Crypto Industry?

There was a discussion the other day on a chat I was in around alt coins and how 99% of them have failed. Bitcoin was the only token that has thrived for years. The rest have struggled or remained stagnant. Take the second best crypto on Earth. Now I may get pelters for saying this but there was a while where the "Flippening" was talked about. Ethereum. one can say this is a success. It is sitting at around $2500 for a long time now. Never dropping too much but never increasing too much either. If you purchased it around $60 in 2017 you did well for yourself. Ok ok price does not really matter as long as the token is working. Ethereum have most of the cryptosphere running on their virtual machines so one can argue this project has succeeded but Ethereum has faced huge problems throughout the years with gas fees and conjestion. It is also hard to scale and there has been bugs in smart contracts which are prone to hacks. Tether is another token that has done well but is pegged to the dollar so it doesn't really count. Solana has done well but I think people are just tired of boom or bust Solana trading meme coins. BNB is also somewhat successful but Binance are struggling with MICA approval to trade in Europe right now so Binance is not as powerful as it once was. Then there is XRP , the surprise success but have their own problems mainly legal battles with the US regulator. Chainlink was the great white hope but never really fulfilled its potential. Dogecoin's faith lies in the hands of one man. Cardano and Polygon and maybe Base following behind these. So one could argue at a stretch that 10-15 cryptocurrencies have actually succeeded. The rest have been failures due to one reason or another. Lack of any usecase being the main reason.

The great Migration

In recent months it is looking like people are moving on from crypto. It was cool for a decade but it is not cool anymore. Too many hopes and dreams ruined. People lost less backing horses. Too many scams. Too many nightmares over lost keys in a hard wallet. People that boast that they are into crypto are kinda seen as losers and scammers now. Many projects are not mentioning crypto in their name in case they are linked to scammers. Memecoins came along and only accelerated these claims. You had better luck in a Vegas casino. The social networks won't touch crypto's with their own token. Tiktok banned our own platform Sportsblock within 1 hour of posting. Also the whole reason people got into crypto in the first place (apart from the digital gold rush) was to make transactions trustless and for more privacy. But now every centralised crypto exchange going has to be KYC complaint.

Scrolling on X the other day the crypto people look to be changing into the AI people for content which looks to be a natural transition. Crypto folk were always more technical than the normies so AI sits perfect with them. However some guy can't get lucky with AI. They need to build something of value which many people cannot really get right yet and this is hard. Crypto folk became SAAS folk. The same people who told the world they made 1 million dollars in 15 minutes on a memecoin are now producing doctored statements that they made 20,000 dollars MMR in a day in subscriptions from their Saas project. They did in their bollocks .You know it's a load of boloney. The AI craze had indeed taken users from the crypto space. People are selling up their bags from crypto to fund start ups and AI tools. Many are setting up their home labs. One tweet of many X users are claiming "We are still early" in a post. Where have we heard that line before??🤔 Screenshot 2026-10-13 151527.jpg

There are quiet whispers around the security aspect of the crypto industry over the coming months. Crypto companies are concerned that in a little while , AI will be so powerful that it will be able to break into modern cryptographic code which will mean an end to crypto as we know it. So is everyone just gonna sell up? The future looks uncertain for crypto and I would not be counting my chickens about the next bull run.

Hive Discord is always colourful with people playing the blame game on the bums who took funds without any results from the blockchain over the years but this conversation is going on around every alt coin Discord server on the planet. What went wrong? Who is to blame? But you have to look at the type of people in these spaces. Our biggest attraction turns out to be Hives biggest weakness. No fees. Anyone can earn for free and this brings the freeloaders in their droves. Most of the cryptocurrencies that had any success at all have a barrier to entry to keep out the freeloaders. Sometimes free is bad. I spoke to a guy not so long ago saying that Hives biggest weakness was lack of fees because normally the stakeholders receive these fees. Interesting point. As the freeloaders leave because the well has dried up (no pun intended) our blockchain will indeed become a better place where we learn from our mistakes. But Hive had more of a problem with this than other chains. One of the top 20 witnesses said in a chat Discord this week that they have never seen so many scummy people in 1 place. It was a comment that raised my eyebrows but when I thought about it and they had a very valid point. There are not many places where fellow Hive users can rob the eye out of your head and then come back for your eyebrows with a smile and a promise. Hive never stood a chance with these dossers but they have got away with it now. The DHF is closed for business but the barn door is now closed after the horse has bolted. But this is just a drop in the ocean. It will be the whole crypto world caving in that will be Hive's downfall, not our own leeches taking funds from the DHF. Crypto is not "the future" anymore. And I for one am not that disappointed about that.

it is funny how the exact same crowd shouting we are still early about crypto just swapped the word for ai overnight

The point about Hive having “no barrier to entry” being the biggest weakness is spot on. “Free is supposed to be good, but it just attracts the freeloaders, scammers and bots that never contribute anything real. Other chains had to pay to get in, which kept the quality up. With the DHF closed and rewards dwindling, the worst actors are leaving. That cleanup might actually make Hive stronger in the long run, if the community survives.

I think crypto is still very much in its infancy. We had the early days of the really imaginative, and then we had the mass hysteria phase, and now we're entering the more serious phase. This phase is where the industry is naturally weeding out the poor performers. As money stopped being cheap to borrow, the world instantly started to cut out whatever wasn't 'serious'. That meant 99% of crypto got the boot.

But what we see now is the industry looking at what does make money. They're treating crypto like a company listed on the NYSE: how much capital is flowing through these chains? If ETH has value, where is the value coming from? Transaction fees are a good sign (ironic that now they're good as they're a sign of life). Another is the amount of capital flowing through contracts. The DeFi side of things which actually show life on the chain beyond just transaction fees.

This is also why older networks have seen revived interest as of late. They have features and transaction fees. ZEC going up so much was because of that: an actual usecase that works and has displayed success in that field.

I actually think we're seeing AI do the same now: it has promise but what they're showing us is absolute shit. It's the dust of a promise compared to what they're holding behind the scenes. That's why everyone hates it, we only hear of the jobs it's taking, the large data centres being built to make shitty images and videos of Will Smith. Not seeing the power behind it in breakthroughs that nations are desperate to get to first. And now as the capital exits those markets, it's the same as crypto: we had the hysteria phase, now it's the quiet building phase.

I've seen a lot of anti-crypto folk on Mastodon become anti-AI. They love having something to hate :) Crypto was the Hot New Thing and spawned a million scams, but the technology still has uses and I see no need to give up on Hive. The AI boom has resulted in lots of new apps built on it.

I don't know how secure the Hive crypto is against AI. Some specific cases of encryption have new attacks. Maybe quantum computing will break some eventually.

We've always had the freeloaders here. Some get dealt with by reducing their rewards. As I understand it they might be less viable if Hive really grew as the rewards would be spread thinner and RC costs could go up. It could be that the cost of creating accounts could go up too.

I do see dangers in a flood of AI created content and engagement. I want to talk to humans, not bots and it may get harder to tell the difference. I'll be here as long as it's useful to me. I'm not so bothered about the rewards for now.
