I had planned on sharing this post on @worldmappin, but the site appears to be down right now, so I guess I will just have to skip it since I am under a bit of a time crunch. After we took our walk along the shores of the Colorado River and Ladybird Lake down in Austin, Texas, we drove around the city a bit more before meeting up with my wife's cousin and his family for lunch.
They have been living in the Austin area ever since the tech companies made a mass exodus from Silicon Valley and moved to Austin. They left their home in San Francisco and started their family in the Lone Star State. When we were trying to decide where to meet up, we deferred to them since they clearly know the city a bit better than we do.
They suggested we try one of their favorite BBQ places. They explained that it is a bit lesser known, so it doesn't get the massive lines that the really famous places like Terry Black's, Franklin, and the Salt Lick do, but it is still some pretty amazing BBQ.
So that is what led us to Micklethwait BBQ. We arrived right before they opened at 11 AM and we were lucky enough to be the first in line. As you can see, the place is pretty unassuming from the outside. In fact, it isn't until you get right in front of the building that you can really tell what it is.
As you can see, in addition to the front of the building, I also took some photos of the foliage around the outside of the building. It's interesting the plants they have down in Texas. Some of them are so different from what we have up in Michigan and it is almost like you are on an alien planet sometimes.
Micklethwait was established in 2012 and if you are the sort of person it matters to, it is a Michelin recognized restaurant as of 2025. I didn't realize it at the time, but there is apparently a large Czech influence down in Austin, Texas. In fact, it is considered the heart of Czech heritage in the United States. To pay homage to that, Micklethwait has a Tex-Czech sausage offering on their menu.
While the interior of the building is pretty small, they have a huge outdoor seating area that we decided to sit in with our party of seven. As we were waiting for our food to be prepared at the counter, there was already a line out the door of people waiting to order their BBQ. As I was standing there a guy came up to the counter and asked them when they usually sold out of meat. They said there isn't a fixed time, but when they sell out, they sell out. Turns out the guy was hoping to run some errands and still be able to come back and order some BBQ.
I'm not sure if he ended up taking the gamble or not.
I was under the impression that my brother in law was going to share the brisket with me, so I ordered a full pound of it hoping that would be enough. It turns out, he ended up changing his mind at the last minute due to them not having the "dino rib" available that day. I'm not going to lie, I ended up eating pretty much all of the brisket myself. It was so dang good.
The potato salad was good, but the real start of the show as far as the sides go were the hatch chili and cheese grits that you see in the last photo above.
Obviously, the brisket was fire too. I've never really been a huge fan of brisket, but this was so fantastic, I might be a convert now!
@mrsbozz got the two meat platter and picked the smoked turkey and then their standard sausage for me. She also got green beans and mac and cheese for her sides. She said it was fantastic and she was really impressed with how well the turkey came out. I can attest to the fact that the sausage was just as good as the brisket.
After we spent a good amount of time catching up and talking in the outdoor seating area, we decided to go around the corner from the smokehouse and visit a little coffee stand that they had set up in an old travel trailer.
They gave us different ideas of things we could check out in the area and places that we might want to visit later that night in our search for some live music.
We ended up taking a bit of a drive to what they call the "hill country" on the North West side of Austin. It was quite beautiful, and while it wasn't really that hilly, I am still glad we checked it out. If you get the chance to visit Austin, and you are looking for some high quality BBQ, but you don't want to have to deal with the lines and crowds at some of the "name brand" places, I highly encourage you to check out Micklethwait's.
