When talk about parenthood, we usually focus on the pleasant aspects of motherhood—for women—and fatherhood as well; but today I’d like to share with you the not-so-pleasant aspects of this role in our lives and everything we need to keep in mind before becoming parents. This is for those who haven’t yet received this blessing, but who should also know that along with it come certain responsibilities and situations that we don’t fully grasp until we actually begin this stage of our lives.
So I’m speaking from my experience as a mother of three. These are the things I’ve shared with my own children for them to keep in mind when they decide to have their own children, and now I’ll share them with you. These are things I would have appreciated someone sharing with me back then, so I could have approached this new experience with greater clarity. The first thing to keep in mind is that having a child involves many changes—both physical and emotional. It’s a beautiful journey, yet one with moments that are difficult to navigate; it’s not something that should be taken as a simple decision, because it isn’t—it’s a lifelong commitment.
As I tell my children, having a child is a lifelong “mortgage” of love—and this entails everything that love offers, but also many changes we aren’t used to, such as no longer sleeping peacefully and uninterrupted, as well as learning to put someone else’s needs before your own—like caring for and feeding that little one before anything else. There will be days when it’s a real struggle just to take a simple shower or eat a meal without interruptions—and that’s just the beginning. As you adjust to your new routines, everything turns upside down—and even more so if you don’t have outside support, such as family members, or if you’re a single mother.
All these situations—though accompanied by smiles, hugs, and the purest love one can feel and experience—go hand in hand with many difficult days. During this time, your child is learning to be independent and growing, just as you, the new mother, are venturing down new, unknown paths. Along the way, your mind and thoughts shift as new fears arise, like “what if I take a shower and they get creative and turn on the stove” or “what if someone knocks on the door and they open it without checking who it is”—those little things like that. You’re always anticipating every possible situation before it happens, and of course, you’re bound to miss something, because you’re human—you’re not infallible—but even so, you’ll always have that feeling of “I should have seen that coming”... That’s just how we moms are.
On the other hand, you start to see the world differently, because those new fears flood your mind—now that you have children to watch over. You no longer walk into a mall restroom the way you used to when you didn’t have kids; now you want to keep an eye on them and, if possible, stay with them the whole time, because your trust in other people has all but vanished, and you don’t trust them the same way, when it comes to your children. And when you look back, you realize that you used to be so trusting—even naive—about many things and situations, but now you can’t afford to be that way, especially these days: the fact is, your peace of mind depends on your children’s safety and well-being; you’re no longer your own priority.
And just like that, there are many other things as well, but you end up understanding, just as I do, that God, in His wisdom, gave you children to love so that you might know what it means to love unconditionally and no matter what—because at the end of the day, you realize that they have been the most beautiful experience and lesson life has given you, despite all the stumbles along the way. It’s not a fairy tale, but it’s the best story you’ll ever live through— that’s how I define it. Best regards, friends!
