Greetings, friends at Shadow Hunters; September is kicking off with grueling heat here in the tropics! I had to get up early today to teach my first university class, and instead of the labs, I was assigned a regular classroom—something I hate, because it gets so unbearably hot that it’s hard to concentrate. I spent an hour and a half teaching in that oven, and when I finished, all I could think about was leaving and having a good lunch because I was starving! So, I rushed home in my car, and just as I was arriving, I spotted this reflection at the intersection leading to the parking lot.

I pass by here frequently on my way back from the university or the lab, and capturing this reflection is always a challenge. This is the main avenue leading to Caracas's historic center, so it’s usually jammed with huge buses and motorcyclists, making it impossible to stop for a moment to photograph the avenue—which actually has a very unique charm.

But this time, the avenue was unusually clear, giving me a full view of the intersection leading to the parking lot. I had an almost panoramic view of a large building featuring several big windows that were displaying a fantastic reflection of the buildings across the street. The nearly cloudless sky was reflected there too; it would have been great to have a cloud drift by for ideal contrast, but the real highlight is the reflection of the buildings in those windows. These are buildings from the Caracas of over 50 years ago, and the scene is highly symbolic: the city center is a chaotic mix of modern urban planning that never quite settled in, coexisting with older structures. It wasn't planned; rather, it’s a testament to the disorganized nature of my city, and I think this reflection captures that perfectly.

Que tal amigos de Shadow Hunters, el mes de septiembre comienza con un calor desgastante en estas tierras del trópico! Hoy tuve que levantarme temprano a dar mi primera clase en la universidad y no me dieron acceso a los laboratorios, sino a las aulas, es algo que odio porque hace un calor tan horrible que cuesta concentrarse allí. Estuve hora y media dando clases en ese horno y cuando terminé, en lo único que pensaba era en irme de alli y comer un buen almuerzo porque estaba hambriento! Así que me regresé corriendo en mi carro a casa para almorzar y justo cuando estaba llegando me encontré con este reflejo en el crfuce que da hacia el estacionamiento.

Paso por aquí con mucha frecuencia cada que regreso de la universidad o del laboratorio, y siempre es un problema capturar este reflejo, principalmente porque esta es la avenida principal que lleva al centro histórico de Caracas y suele estar siempre congestionado, con autobuses enormes y motorizados que hacen imposible detenerse un momento para fotografiar la gran avenida que tiene un encanto muy particular.

Pero en esta ocasión la avenida estaba inusualmente despejada y tenía una vista completa del cruce a la calle que da al estacionamiento. Tuve por tanto una vista casi panorámica de este gran edificio que tenia varios ventanales y estaba mostrando este genial reflejo de los edificios que tenía al frente. También se reflejaba el cielo que estaba casi completamente despejado, habría sido genial que se atravesara alguna nube para un contraste ideal, pero lo que realmente destaca es el reflejo de los edificios en los ventanales. Son edificios de la Caracas de hace más de 50 años y es muy simbólico porque el centro de la ciudad es así una composición desordenada de urbanismo moderno que no termina de establecerse y convive con edificaciones antiguas, es algo que no fue planificado, sino que es una muestra de lo desordenada que es mi ciudad y creo que este reflejo lo captura perfectamente.
