Happy Friday, Shadow Hunters community! Here in Venezuela, whenever Friday arrives, we say, "Thank God it's Friday!" And it's true, after being bombed and then shaken by a double earthquake, making it to the weekend alive is something to celebrate. Just today I was returning from taking school supplies to my nephew. I decided to take a taxi because I didn't want to waste gas, since I have to wait in lines for practically 16 hours to fill up! When I got home, the taxi dropped me off at the bus stop, and I stood there for a while wondering whether to go buy some beers or just go home and make lunch because it was already 4:30 pm!
As I thought, the afternoon sun was already beginning to set over the mountains west of the Caracas Valley, but the heat didn't lessen; it was relentlessly beating down on us with all its remaining intensity. But precisely because of that, and because of the angle of the light, it was possible to capture the shadows of that hidden street in my city, and so I decided to capture the shadows I found in that part of downtown Caracas. As I've mentioned in previous posts, Caracas, my city, is an entropic metropolis, that is, a vortex of entropy that rejects any manifestation of order. And this is very pronounced in this part of the historic center due to the large number of ministries and banks concentrated here. So, when it's time to leave on a Friday, people seem to speed up, causing the city to reach a final peak of chaos as people rush home and others rush with their friends to the liquor store. That's what I wanted to capture for this SMASH contest round #442.

I captured shadows of passersby, workers, office employees, bank tellers, all of them hurrying to their destinations. It reminded me of when my uncle came from the countryside with his daughter, and one of the things he told me was why people seemed to be running away from something. I found it quite funny at first, but then I thought about it more. It was true; things are calmer in the countryside, and time seems to flow more slowly. Here in the capital, we're slaves to time; it dictates our daily lives. Perhaps I should have escaped with them to the countryside and tried to lead a quieter life. The last photo I took was the one I decided to submit to the contest. It shows the shadows of three young people heading to the liquor store where I was planning to buy some beers. They seemed happy it was finally Friday, which reminded me of my university days. So I decided to go make lunch and be content with having captured these shadows on a Friday evening.

I hope you enjoyed this entry for the SMASH contest. It was interesting to capture these everyday shadows, shadows that come and go. The city of Caracas is bisected by the great Guaire River from east to west, and it's usually the route every Caracas resident takes to get to work. There's even a song that tries to connect our daily routine with the great river, with the line: "We are fish of the Guaire," and I think these shadows that come and go also reflect this saying. See you in the next contest, friends. Cheers!

Saludos!
