It has been a truly hectic week for me; starting a new job is no simple task, and this one is quite different from my regular position at the university. However, the circumstances that led me here essentially presented me with a fait accompli: the person who recommended me for this second job was one of my mentor professors—someone who shaped me into the professional I am today. Knowing how truly dismal the economic situation is for scientists in Venezuela, I felt compelled to join this new university, which focuses on emerging fields of science and biotechnology. I simply couldn't turn down the kind gesture of a professor who was fully aware of the hardships I am currently facing.

Against this backdrop, I headed to my first day of classes in this new professional chapter. The first thing that stood out was the university's remote location; it is nearly an hour's journey from the Caracas valley if you are starting from the city center. Furthermore, it sits at a significant elevation above the valley, making the air quite chilly—though you hardly noticed it, as the sky was remarkably clear. The cold air seemed to be offset by the afternoon sunlight bathing the entire hillside. As soon as I stepped off the bus, I spotted a long shadow cast by the buildings onto the asphalt; because the site is so vast and open, these shadows stand out with striking detail and contrast. I knew this was an opportunity that was unlikely to come around again, so I decided to grab my mobile phone and capture the various shadows I encountered, in order to share them with you in the SMASH contest—specifically, edition #445.

However, the shadow that stood out the most was the one I caught just as I was leaving; it was 5 PM, and the sun was casting shadows at a specific angle, allowing me to capture the silhouette of these conifers. While these trees do exist at my regular workplace, they are scarce there because the valley sits at an elevation of around 800 meters, whereas here we are at 1,700 meters—more than double the altitude! Consequently, it is much more common to see clusters of these tall trees here. It was wonderful to see how the shadows were cast across the hillside at that time of day, shaped by both their long trunks and their broad, leafy crowns. It is interesting to note the prevalence of these trees here; in contrast, down in the valley at 800 meters, one is more likely to see chaguaramos (royal palms). These palms often have an even more imposing stature—reaching heights of over 30 meters—and I have shared their shadows in previous contests. All in all, I really enjoyed capturing this shadow just after finishing my classes, while taking the time to stroll around the university grounds. I might well find other equally interesting shadows for future posts, so I’ll be keeping an eye out in the coming weeks.

Feliz fin de semana apreciada comunidad de Shadow Hunters! Esta ha sido una semana realmente agitada para mi, comenzar un nuevo trabajo no es algo sencillo y se encuentra bastante alejado de mi trabajo formal en la universidad. Pero las circunstancias que me llevaron a esta situación en cierta manera me dejaron en una situación de hechos consumados, porque quienes me recomendaron para participar en este segundo trabajo fue uno de mis profesores mentores, que me ha formado como el profesional que soy hoy. Sabiendo que la situación económica de nosotros los científicos en Venezuela es verdaderamente triste me comprometió a participar en una nueva universidad dedicada a nuevas ramas de la ciencia y biotecnología, así que no pude negarme a la buena intención de mi profesor que sabía perfectamente las dificultades por las que estoy atravesando.

En este contexto fui a mi primer día de clases en esta nueva etapa profesional, y lo primero que destacaba era la distancia de esta nueva universidad, se encuentra a casi 1 hora de viaje desde el valle de Caracas si estas en el centro, además esta a una altura importante del valle, por lo que hacía bastante frío, aunque no se notaba porque el cielo estaba bastante despejado en esta ocasión y aunque el aire era frío, parecía cancelarse con la luz del sol de la tarde que bañaba toda la colina. Pues bien, aquí apenas llegando donde me dejo el autobús ya podía encontrar una larga sombra de los edificios que se proyectaba sobre el asfalto, como el lugar es bastante amplio y abierto, estas sombras pueden apreciarse con gran detalle y contraste. Esta fue una oportunidad que sabía que difícilmente se iba a repetir, por eso decidí tomar la cámara de mi móvil y capturar las distintas sombras que me fui encontrando para compartirlas con ustedes en este concurso SMASH en su edición #445.

Pero la sombra que más destacó fue la que conseguí justo cuando me retiraba, ya eran las 5 pm y el sol proyectaba las sombras con cierto ángulo y allí pude capturar la sombra de estos árboles coníferos. En mi trabajo formal estos árboles están presentes pero son muy pocos y es que la altura del valle esta sobre los 800 mts, mientras que aquí estamos a los 1700 mts de altura, más del doble! Por lo que es más frecuente ver agrupaciones de estos largos arboles, es maravilloso ver como las sombras se proyectaban sobre esa loma a esa hora de la tarde, en parte por sus largos troncos como también por las formas de sus amplias copas frondosas. Es interesante porque entiendo que aquí sean frecuentes estos árboles, en cambio en el valle a 800mts de altura es más frecuente ver chaguaramos o palmeras reales que suelen tener un porte incluso mayor al de estos árboles llegando a más de 30 metros de altura y que en anteriores concursos le he compartido su sombra. En resumen, fue una sombra que disfrute capturarla justo cuando ya había terminado de dar mis clases y me tomé el tiempo de dar un paseo por los espacios de la universidad, es posible que consiga otras sombras igual de interesantes para futuras publicaciones, así que estaré atentos en las próximas semanas.
