Hello, friends of the Ladies of Hive community! Here I am again, wanting to share with you a topic that I've been thinking about all day long. It all started from an image I saw with a quote that deeply moved me: "Motherhood consists of preparing the only people we never want to be away from us to live on their own."
There are moments in life that mark a clear before and after. The first comes almost without warning: that little test with two lines, or the doctor’s voice confirming that a new life is growing inside us. At that very moment, our brain is swept up in a storm where immense joy coexists with a substitute feeling—that little scare that makes our hearts skip a beat—due to the immense responsibility that’s about to fall upon us. From that “positive” moment on, we cease to be the center of our own universe. A new person is born who, overnight, becomes more important than we are, and from that point forward, our ultimate goal will always be their happiness and well-being.
Projecting Certainty in the Midst of the StormFrom infancy through preschool and school age, motherhood becomes the art of weathering the storm. We learn to decipher cries, battle nighttime fevers, and meet gazes filled with doubt. It’s curious how we develop that almost magical duality: on the outside, we project absolute calm and a firm demeanor, pretending we know exactly what to do. But on the inside, it’s a different story. In the silence of the night, as we tuck them in, we ask God that we’re doing it right. That constant unease in our hearts is soothed only when we see them smiling, healthy and content, knowing that we’re managing to provide them with the shelter, security, and joy they deserve.
Then, almost without realizing it, the children grow up and step through the door into adolescence. This stage brings with it another kind of flutter in the soul: the challenge of watching them develop their own personalities. Suddenly, rebellion sets in, and they are no longer as attached to what we say or want them to do as they were when they were little. They push us aside a little to find their own path. We are no longer their only refuge or their first choice. It’s up to us to learn to take a back seat, accompanying them patiently while the hormonal storm passes, with the faith that everything we’ve sown will bear fruit and that, sooner or later, they’ll come back to us seeking that comforting hug.
The Empty Nest and the Mission AccomplishedBut there’s one phase for which absolutely no one prepares us: motherhood with an absent child. The day comes when they spread their wings, start their own families, and build their own lives. The house is left in a strange silence, and the role of a mother transforms once again. It’s no longer about day-to-day care, but about learning to wait—to wait for a call, a visit, or a simple message. We’re left with the deep satisfaction of having done a good job, seeing them build their own happiness, and the certainty that we’ll always be that safe haven they can turn to at any time—for any need or simply to celebrate life.
