Como el niño que una vez fuí // Like the child I once was

There is a kind of happiness that transcends all barriers of time. Fleeting, dreamlike, and filled with a joy that seems to well up from the very depths of our being. There is no reason for fear, and emotion overflows completely because of the vivid anticipation revealed through a truly genuine smile. It’s that intense feeling we experienced as children—one that has surely left an indelible mark on our hearts. Do you remember the first time you felt happiness like that? During such a beautiful time in our lives, perhaps we can highlight those moments that are immortalized in our feelings and emotions—moments that suddenly well up, as if, in an instant, we were children once again.

¡Me levanté feliz!

A couple of nights ago, right before going to sleep, I felt like checking the breakfast menu they’d be serving at work. “Cerelac Atol.” And my eyes practically sparkled with the kind of joy that makes your heart skip a beat in a special way. That happiness automatically takes me back to my childhood, and the feeling seems even stronger because it’s something that continues to have such a positive effect on my emotions. I had a hard time falling asleep, but when I heard the alarm in the early morning, my smile beat the alarm to opening my eyes. I woke up happy! And thinking about it was like a breath of fresh air that ignited all my motivation. It’s about a 15-minute walk from my house to work—a fleeting moment for a mind and heart that, in harmony, were already anticipating my immediate reaction.

"And then I came face to face with the child I once was." An indescribable moment in which I was able to eat my Cerelac porridge. I felt so happy—and believe me, it’s a feeling far stronger than I can put into words. One large cup was enough to nourish my soul, not only physically but also emotionally. I didn’t mind laughing and talking to myself, because as a child I used to do that and it made me feel great. If I could freeze time, this would surely be the best moment, because beyond just food or drink, there’s a force that seems to be waiting for moments like this. When it was over, there was no sadness—as if something inside me were convinced that something so special could happen again someday, and it would once more be that happiness that will always be welcome as long as my heart can feel and beat with such vitality.

The thing is, a few days ago something just as strange as it was special happened to me. It turns out that as I was walking, I suddenly caught a pleasant scent that I could associate with food but couldn’t quite identify. I kept walking, and it was as if something inside me already knew what it was, even though my mind couldn’t quite figure it out. After several minutes, the realization hit me, and with it came a beautiful memory: that smell when my mom would pack my breakfast in a container to take to school. Why was it such a unique and special smell? Because my mom always used aluminum foil to wrap it—something that trapped a unique aroma I associate with my school days. These are truly moments of nostalgia that are worth a lifetime and more!

These moments seem to come at just the right time, when everything loses its rhythm and zest, and you find yourself questioning who you are now. No wonder so many of us today look back on the past and feel that innate desire to have the chance to relive something that once left an indelible mark on our lives. Perhaps others feel the same way but about a different stage of their lives—yet the same sense of happiness you once felt and can now recall thanks to these events. I know I can no longer be who I once was, but I know that through my memories, those joys can reappear before me, inspire a smile, and bring color to a soul that sometimes stumbles slowly and heavily.
