Sun orchid walk on Terrey Hills side of NP : September 1 2026

Got a warm day coming up. Warm for the start of September. Plan for the day is to find a track to walk and do some shopping. Picked a track in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP not often walked - looking for a few spring orchids and a track with no traffic noise

.

Track I planned to walk runs at right angles to the Perimeter Trail - walked that a bit and saw a flash of blue. Thought it was one of those markers walkers leave to highlight something of interest - nope it was a spotted sun orchid

Close up of thelymitra ixioides - they need a 25C day to open. Got that.

Walked down Smiths Creek firetrail - track moves away from the houses on a ridge line going down to the creek.

Patersonia iris - often come along at the same time as sun orchids

Wax flower - had not noticed the weevil when I took the photo

A few flashes of blue in the bush. Not sun orchids - dampiera purpurea

Off track for a red spider grevillea. Was hoping to find snake orchids in the scribbly gums. None of those

Lots of yellow pea flowers with bees. Picked this one for the photo and saw a bug

Moved around a bit for the photo - a well disguised bug with shades of yellow

Sundew plant pushing out a new flower spike - they like a bit of damp

A few flowering - sundew

Red spider grevillea in great light just opening up

Hibbertia flower - the yellow likes to grab the light making it hard to get a photo in focus

Had spied the checker board bug - the other bug cruised in for the photo

Framing for a wattle flower

Sydney boronia - no bugs

Grand old scribbly gum

Grey spider grevillea - my friend calls them woolly spiders

Drumsticks flower - a few only

A bit of testing for hibbertia flower - light and shade. Light sort of works

Back to bugs. A large pea flower and a weevil easy to spot - not eaten any of the flower yet

A bit of woolly - small leafed white beard

Coral heath flower

Side on angles

Wax flowers

Smooth ziera - smaller than a US penny

Grey spider grevillea in a different more direct light

Clustered darwinia - not sure how common these are. First time seen inland

The whole walk down Smiths Creek produced no orchids. I took a short walk along the Perimeter Track as I recall seeing sun orchids previously. Sure enough found one - thelymitra ixioides

Side on. Tracked back and a found a lot flowering close to where I joined the track

Short on spots

Subtle colour with a touch of pink

Full on spots. Turned into a long walk with spring flowers and insect and bird action. And orchids all in the first 200 metres from the car

Did the shopping. Got home before school zones. Busy afternoon doing accounting. Software I use is killing me - super slow.

Bbq for dinner. Nice temperatures to cook outside
