Portfolio News

In a week where S&P 500 dropped 0.47% and Europe rose 0.47%, my pension portfolio rose 0.73%. Heavy lifting from ASX gold and uranium stocks accounting for more than half the gain.

Big movers of the week were Centauri Minerals (CENT.V) (58.6%), Articore Group (ATG.AX) (51.8%), AML3D (AL3.AX) (43.6%), Cauldron Energy (CXU.AX) (29.4%), Western Uranium & Vanadium Corp (WUC.CN) (27.8%), Evolution Energy Minerals (EV1.AX) (22.2%), Bannerman Energy (BMN.AX) (20.7%), Blue Star Helium (BNL.AX) (20%), Brightstar Resources (BTR.AX) (19.1%), Iondrive (ION.AX) (18.2%), NICO Resources (NC1.AX) (18.2%), Elevate Uranium (EL8.AX) (18%), Atomic Eagle (AEU.AX) (17.4%), WhiteHawk (WHK.AX) (16.7%), Silex Systems (SLX.AX) (16.6%), Honey Badger Silver (TUF.V) (16.3%), Atha Energy Corp (SASK.V) (16.1%), Liberty Financial Group (LFG.AX) (15.3%), Pilbara Gold (PGL.AX) (15.1%), Strategic Minerals Plc (SML.L) (14.9%), Lindsay Australia (LAU.AX) (14.8%), Ramsay Health Care (RHC.AX) (14.5%), Aeris Resources (AIS.AX) (14.3%), Alligator Energy (AGE.AX) (14.3%), Azincourt Energy Corp (AAZ.V) (14.3%), Cettire (CTT.AX) (14.3%), Deep Yellow (DYL.AX) (13.2%), Solstice Advanced Materials (SOLS) (13.1%), F4 Uranium Corp (FFU.V) (13%), Silver Crown Royalties (SCRI.NE) (12.1%), Aldebaran Resources (ALDE.V) (12%), Orpheus Uranium (ORP.AX) (12%), Paladin Energy (PDN.AX) (11.7%), GrainCorp (GNC.AX) (11.4%), Resimac Group (RMC.AX) (11.2%), Elixir Energy (EXR.AX) (10.9%), BetaShares Global Uranium ETF (URNM.AX (10.7%), Lotus Resources (LOT.AX) (10.4%), SkyCity Entertainment Group (SKC.AX) (10%)

39 stocks in the big movers list - a bit more like it. Big themes are here - from the top - Uranium (15 stocks), alternate energy (2 stocks), gold/silver mining (5 stocks), rare earths (1 stock), nuclear tech (1 stock)

Aug28News.png

Week saw US markets focused on yields and the Federal Reserve and Warsh speech at Jackson Hole making for an up and down week. Solid Nvidia (NVDA) earnings did help tech stocks stage a bit of a recovery into the end of the week.

Aug28Debt.jpg

US debt passed $40 trillion in the week. People are starting to sit up and take notice. That phrase "dollar debasement"

Did start some digging last week on how to trade dollar debasement- asked AI for ideas. The standard reply was to be long Swiss Francs. The commodity related answer was Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Brazilian Real. The big movers list from the last few weeks tells you the other way - gold and silver. Did put a chart together of the Swiss Franc and overlaid the Australian Dollar

Aug26USDCHF.jpg

From the 2025 high vs Swiss Franc has seen a 12.2% decline in dollar value. The decline vs Australian Dollar is 16.3% - seems that investors based in Australia are somewhat hedged provided one has enough cash and stock denominated in AUD.

Aug26USDCHFvsOthers.jpg

Canadian Dollar has only seen a 3.6% strengthening and gold price has risen 73% but still 27 points below the pre-war highs.

A lot of this week's investing action was influenced by that - ASX and Canadian gold and silver and copper stocks. Hedging the US Dollar by leaning away from holding US assets. Also took a lot of steps to put in place more open-ended gold and silver options trades.

Crypto Consolidates

Bitcoin price consolidated between the next levels up after the big run finishing the week 0.8% higher than the open with a trough to peak range of 6.2%.

Aug30BTC.jpg

Ethereum price did the same and then ran out of steam finishing the week 1.1% lower than the open with a peak to trough range of 7%.

Aug30ETH.jpg

Most altcoins gave away at least half the gains from the prior week However, Uniswap (UNIBTC) continued the momentum for the week before with a 70% pop coming into the new week

Aug30UNIBTC.jpg

Nuclear Energy Holdings

One sale and a few additions in US and on ASX and a 1.25% increase in valuations.

Aug28NuclearChange.jpg

Mix of holdings sees Paladin Energy (PDN.AX) rise three places to slot 7. NuScale Power Corporation (SMR) drops two places to slot 8 and slots in below enCore Energy Corp (EU). Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM) comes into Top 10 in slot 9 and Lightbridge Corporation (LTBR) drops out the Top 10. Share of portfolios rises 0.4 points to 28.8%

Aug28Nuclear.jpg

Holdings by stage sees two largish changes with Explorers going up 0.6 points and Technology dropping 1.1 points

Aug28NuclearbyStage.jpg

Alternate Energy Holdings

One addition in lithium/recycling - categorized as lithium. Surprising 4.4% drop in valuations. Opening balance reduced to reflect the removal of Mineral Resources (MIN.AX) - long time ago sold.

Aug28LithiumChange.jpg

Mix of holdings sees PLS Group (PLS.AX) rise one place into slot 8. Top holding ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT) comes down 1.2 points to 18.6% and L'Air Liquide S.A. (AI.PA) goes up a whole point. Share of portfolios drops 0.4 points to 7.0%

Aug28Lithium.jpg

Precious Metals Holdings

Started loading up on smaller names in gold and silver and replaced a few stocks assigned last week. Valuations improve 2% - opening balance changed to reflect the addition of MGX Resources (MGX.AX) - more of a gold business now than an iron ore business.

Aug28PreciousChange.jpg

Mix of holdings sees Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM) come into Top 10 in slot 7 on the addition there. First Majestic Silver (AG) drops two places to slot 10 and Hercules Metals (BIG.V) drops out the Top 10. Number of Others goes up 8 with the additions across the board. Top holding UBS ETRACS Silver Shares Covered Call ETN (SLVO) comes down 2.5 points to 17.3%. Share of portfolios jumps 1.2 points to 10.5%.

Bought

Denison Mines Corp (DNN): Uranium. Added a parcel to small managed portfolio after assignment in Uranium Royalty Corp (UROY) - not enough cash in this account to replace like with like. Wrote covered call for 2.2% premium with 11.2% price coverage.

Glencore plc (GLEN.L): Base Metals. Replaced holdings in managed portfolio and personal portfolio - covered the 5 shares short in each - with a few errors along the way. Multiplier is still 1005 - landed up with 1000 in managed portfolio - added another small parcel - now have 1020 shares. Wrote covered call for 1.4% premium with 4.7% price coverage. Worst error was selling 1010 shares in personal portfolio instead of buying - recovered that next day at a 1.9% blended profit. Wrote covered call for 1.4% premium with 4.5% price coverage.

Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM): Uranium. Started the rebuild of uranium holdings in managed portfolio the lazy way - 100 shares of the ETF

Energy Fuels (UUUU): Uranium. With price opening at $15.00 (Aug 25) put in place an April 2027 expiry 16/22/14 call spread risk reversal in managed portfolio. This offers maximum profit potential of 251% for 47.8% price move. The sold put (14) fully funds the call spread premium with 5.9% price coverage

Aug25UUUU.jpg

Crowded chart with new trade shown by the blue arrow markers - just looking for price to get two thirds of the way to recent highs. Sold puts are a bit in no mans land.

Scaled into a bunch of positions in personal portfolio on a dollar debasement bend.

Astra Exploration (ASTR.V): Silver/Gold Mining. Two tranches in the week

Astra implements decades of Latin American exploration and discovery experience to identify highly prospective projects which have the potential to host world-class deposits. The Paleocene Region of northern Chile, and the Deseado Massif of southern Argentina, are two of the most prolific epithermal regions in the world, hosting numerous world-class precious metals deposits.

PTX Metals (PTX.V): Base Metals.

The W2 Project covers a layered mafic-ultramafic intrusive complex — highly prospective for Cu-Ni and reef-type PGE deposits. Past exploration totaling ~$25M by Inco, KWG, and Aurora Platinum with ~20,000m of drilling.

https://honeybadgersilver.com/

Later in the week scaled into a bunch of mining properties in Canada - a different way to hedge USD dollar debasement - invest in gold and Canadian Dollars. Had a few positions that were too small.

Gold X2 Mining (AUXX.V): Gold Mining.

Company engages in the exploration and development of gold and metal mineral properties in Canada. It holds 100% in the Moss Gold Project located in Ontario, Canada.

Aug28AUXX.jpg

Cascadia Minerals (CAM.V): Base Metals. 76% copper, 17% gold, 3% silver.

Cascadia is a Canadian junior mining company focused on making new copper and gold discoveries in the Yukon. Cascadia’s flagship asset is the 177 km2 Carmacks Project, located within in central Yukon, Canada, 35 km southeast of the past producing Minto Mine. The road-accessible Carmacks Project has a Measured and Indicated Resource containing 651 Mlbs of copper and 302 koz of gold (36.3 million tonnes grading 0.81% copper, 0.26 g/t gold, 3.23 g/t silver and 0.01% molybdenum) or 1.07% copper equivalent

Ivanhoe Mines (IVN.TO): Base Metals. Replaced portion of stock assigned at 2.3% premium to assigned price.

Ivanhoe Mines engages in the mining, development, and exploration of minerals and precious metals in Africa. The company explores gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium, nickel, copper, zinc, germanium, silver, and lead deposits

Africa is not a favourite place but the board is led by Robert Friedland, an industry stalwart

Maple Gold Mines (MGM.V): Gold Mining.

Maple Gold Mines Ltd. operates as a gold exploration company in Canada. Its flagship project is the Douay gold project, which consists of 819 claims covering an area of approximately 441 square kilometers located along the Casa Berardi Deformation Zone in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt in Quebec.

Ur-Energy Inc (URG): Uranium. Added in personal portfolio.

Ur-Energy is the largest and fastest-growing ISR uranium mining company in the United States. It owns and operates the Lost Creek ISR uranium facility in south-central Wyoming, which has produced more than 3.5 million pounds of U₃O₈ since operations began, and the Shirley Basin ISR operation in central Wyoming, where uranium recovery commenced in April 2026. Lost Creek and Shirley Basin have combined annual licensed production and toll-processing capacity of 4.2 million pounds of U₃O₈.

https://www.ur-energy.com/about

Denison Mines Corp (DNN): Uranium. With price opening at $3.55 (Aug 25) managed to buy a September expiry 4.5 strike call option - meant to write a covered call. Next day sold a 3.5 strike put options - covers the premium as a way to recover the error.

Focus Minerals (FML.AX): Gold Mining. Stock appeared on ASX portfolio screen - rather than adding to that portfolio added a larger parcel in personal portfolio. Why? Existing mill - currently 2.59 million ounces MRE with more to be confirmed in 2026.

Aug24FML.jpg

Focus Minerals (ASX: FML) is a Western Australian gold producer with a strong foundation in the Coolgardie region. Our operations are centred on the Three Mile Hill processing plant and a portfolio of high-quality open pit and underground deposits.

Maritana Minerals (MRT.AX): Gold Mining. Stock appeared on ASX portfolio screen - rather than adding to that portfolio added a larger parcel in personal portfolio. Why?

Maritana Minerals is an emerging mid-tier gold producer with a pipeline of high quality projects located in the heart of the West Australian Goldfields. The Company controls over 1.9Moz of gold in Resources and is refurbishing the Black Swan Processing Hub northeast of Kalgoorlie for gold production

Aug26MRT.jpg

Chart shows price bottoming out - start of a new cycle is the test.

https://maritanaminerals.com.au/

Lithium Universe (LU7.AX): Lithium. Company announced a placement (was surprised how small it was) without a SPP - hate that. Added to holding in personal portfolio to ameliorate dilution and to average down entry price. Have been interesting announcements about e-waste recycling results in prototypes - could become a silver/gold/gallium/copper player mostly recycling solar panels.

Boss Energy (BOE.AX): Uranium. Company announced results which disappointed markets. Interesting parts were price achieved on uranium sold was better than Paladin Energy (PDN.AX) announced the week before. This suggests the contract book is somewhat less locked in - a big pile of ore in stockpile helps too and wellfield design for ISR mining indicated that the issues with field continuity highlighted the year before may be less of an issue. Seems that nobody picked up on that - earnings and guidance looked solid enough to add another parcel in personal portfolio to average down entry price. This is a long hold story.

Denarius Metals Corp (DMET.NE): Gold Mining. Don Durett idea - 0.5 million ounces gold and 2.2 million ounces silver. Potential expansion of resources in Colombia and reopening in Spain. Also base metals potential. Added parcels in personal portfolio and managed portfolio

Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM): Gold/Silver Mining. Assigned on sold put in managed portfolio. Breakeven $149.40 vs $153.33 close (Aug 28) - 3 cycles

Silvercorp Metals (SVM.TO): Silver Mining. Replaced part of holding in pension portfolio assigned last time at 14% premium to assigned price. Strong support from Don Durett and Brian Wilkes for the multi-local silver potential especially with exposure to China. With price opening at $17.52 (Aug 24), also put in place a June 2027 20/15 risk reversal in pension portfolio.

Aug24SVM.jpg

Let's look at the chart which shows the bought call (20) and breakeven as blue rays and the sold put (15) as a dotted red ray with the expiry date the dotted green line on the right margin. Price has been in something of a range with the last cycle breaking up higher - get a repeat of that zigzag and this trade will be running open-ended well above breakeven. Trade management could be to improve breakeven by selling a call in the blue sky zone or sell some more puts

Equinox Gold Corp (EQX): Gold Mining. Replaced part of holding in pension portfolio assigned last time at 8.5% premium to assigned price. Keen to remain invested in big names. With price opening at $13.76 (Aug 24), also put in place a January 2028/January 2027 15/12.5 risk reversal in pension portfolio. Somehow got a few lines crossed and managed to write a pile of September expiry 12.5 strike sold puts. What was not fully funded is now a funded risk reversal. Provided price stays above the sold put strike (12.5) at September expiry breakeven will be $14.49 - i.e., well below the bought call (15) strike

Aug24EQX.jpg

Let's look at the chart which shows the bought call (15) and breakeven as blue rays and the sold puts (12.5) as a dashed red ray with the expiry dates the dotted green lines on the right margins. Price appears to be in the middle of a big pull back and reversal - keep going like the last one and price will stay above the sold put (12.5) and create a strong open-ended trade.

OR Royalties (OR): Gold Mining. With price opening at $36.37 (Aug 24), put in place a April 2027/October 2026 45/35 risk reversal in pension portfolio.

Aug24OR.jpg

Let's look at the chart which shows the bought call (45) and breakeven as blue rays and the sold put (35) as a dotted red ray with the expiry dates the dotted green lines on the right margins. Price appears to be in the middle of a big pull back and reversal - keep going like the last one (the pink zigzag) and price will stay above the sold put (35) before expiry and create a strong open-ended trade. More likely is the light blue arrow scenarios - need two more of those to squeak in the money. Trade setup is not great as the sold put (35) is in no mans land and not behind support.

Also managed to buy a September expiry 40 strike call option in pension portfolio - maybe a mistake.

U.S. Gold Corp (USAU): Gold Mining. With price opening at $16.58 (Aug 24), put in place a November 2026 20/12.5 ratio risk reversal in pension portfolio.

Aug24USAU.jpg

Let's look at the chart which shows the bought call (20) as a blue ray and the sold put (12.5) as a dotted red ray with the expiry date the dotted green line on the right margin. Price appears to be consolidating after the big pull back and reversal. Trade setup looks better with sold put (12.5) below the last lows. If price continues to run the light blue arrow scenario it will be in-the-money. The risk is another pull back and time runs out. Breakeven is $20.10 - so not far above the bought call (20)

United States Natural Gas (UNG): US Gas. Added a parcel in pension portfolio to scale in. Rick Rule idea

Infinity Natural Resources (INR): US Oil. Added a parcel in pension portfolio to scale in. Rick Rule idea. Wrote covered call for 2.8% premium with 3.6% price coverage.

Put Funded LEAPs

Saw a video a few weeks back where the presenter was selling S&P 500 INDEX (^SPX) minis futures puts on Sunday open with a week to expiry and investing the put premium in longer dated call options. Started a test of my own.

Strategy idea is simple - pick a stock (rather than SPX mini) which has weekly options, a reasonably high ticker price (to get a large enough premium) and one you would like to own at a lower price. It helps if you have a degree of confidence that price will not drop - make the strike choice quite wide. The presenter used S&P mini futures - not what I want to own. Once you know how much premium you can earn find a stock you would like to buy a call option on somewhere in the future. Go out as far in time and up in strike as the premium received allows.

Process:

  1. Sold Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 450 strike August 28 2026 put options - 1 contract at $6.45 = $643.95 premium. Return 1.43% Coverage 4.1%
  2. Bought First Majestic Silver (AG) 20 strike December 2026 call options - 2 contracts at $2.54 = $508.83 premium. Now this is not really a LEAP - might want to go out further in time

Charts - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) price has been pulling back over recent weeks - would not mind buying below the recent lows and implied volatility on chip stocks is quite high compared to SPX (0.47 vs 0.13).

Aug24AMD.jpg

Makes for a free trade if sold put expires out-the-money (which it did) and there was premium left over - could be applied to next weekly trade. The gurus keep talking about the start of the next commodity bull cycle on the back of dollar debasement.

Aug24AG.jpg

Get a repeat of the last cycle and this trade will be a solid winner. Looks like a bit of a stretch but it is a free trade

Sold

Atomic Eagle (AEU.AX): Uranium. Closed out portion in pension portfolio at 52 week high for 130% profit since November 2025. Trimming position size.

Aumann AG (AAG.DE): Europe Industrials. Closed out as broker did not get corporate action right on a tender offer - closed for half of trading costs. Held since Jul 2026 waiting for price. STP special situations idea

ASX Portfolio

The segment reports trading in ASX fractional share portfolio. Trade entries are made based on stock screens looking for undervalued stocks (price to book, price earnings, price to sales) that are showing technical signs of breaking a downtrend. Exits are made at 35% profit or 25% if 52 week high is lower than 35% advance. New buys are in $500 lots. Scale ins and top ups in $250 lots

Top Ups

Elders Ltd (ELD.AX): Insurance. Dividend yield 6.00%

Aug26ELD.jpg

Chart goes back to first trade - an entry on a break up that did not continue. 2nd entry was after a bottoming out. 3rd trade made too close to the one before - best just not do it. New trade is on a reversal from a level going back all the way to 2023 which has now been tested and reversed off. Maybe this time.

MGX Resources (MGX.AX): Base Metals.

MGX Resources (MGX.AX, formerly Mount Gibson Iron) is a mid-tier West Australian miner with a record of successful project development. After two decades of continuous iron ore production, MGX has pivoted to gold and base metals, focused on the advanced 2.8 Moz Central Tanami Gold Project Joint Venture (CTPJV - MGX holds 50%)

Aug26MGX.jpg

Chart shows price breaking the most recent downtrend and making a higher low - looking to exit at breakeven somewhere around the recent highs - better chance as a gold miner than a small tier iron ore producer.

Auto-invest for Grandkids

Tenth month running mini-ETF investment for my two granddaughters for $100 a month spread across a mix of uranium and rare earths stocks. Auto-invest programs carry no fees on entry

  • Orpheus Uranium Ltd (ORP.AX): Uranium.
  • American Uranium (AMU.AX): Uranium.
  • Lotus Resources (LOT.AX): Uranium

Changed this a bit dropping investing further in Dateline Resources (DTR.AX) and Locksley Resources (LKY.AX). For Dateline there is a court injunction suspending operations at the Colosseum Project rare earths project. For Locksley, active field exploration at both the Desert Antimony Mine and El Campo prospects have ceased because of a collapse in spot antimony prices.

Added one rare earths play and one gold miner in their places. Fortunately investments made to date are small - will just ride them out.

  • Ora Banda Mining (OBM.AX): Gold Mining.
  • American Rare Earths (ARR.AX): Rare Earths.

Sold

MyState Limited (MYS.AX): Financial Services. Closed at 52 week high target for 27.2% profit since May 2025.

Shorts

Pfizer Inc (PFE): US Pharmaceuticals. Am short stock in personal portfolio with breakeven of $25.43 - sold a put below breakeven ITM with 1.7% return and -0.3% price coverage.

Aug26PFE.jpg

Chart shows a simple enough idea - if price drops below $28 stock gets assigned and caps the loss risk of a runaway price. Kind of hoping the court case comes along. What seems clear from the price action is we are not seeing the required down moves to make a winner.

Great macro update! Scaling into gold and silver while hedging USD exposure seems like a smart play given the current market volatility. Precious metals and mining stocks definitely offer solid risk protection right now. Thanks for sharing your breakdown!
