Had an idea for the day to walk a track close to where we used to live - a few spring orchids the target. Took the car - not organised yet to do train bike - and it gives a chance to pop into a butcher for Father's Day lunch

A huge pall of smoke to the south of where I was planning to walk

Yep - a hazard reduction burn. The map shows the burn area is south of Bobbin Head Road. I am north. The detail track closures include where I want to walk

Both these tracks closed. Guessing is they cannot be sure fire will not jump the road. They do not want find bodies on the tracks. Walked the fence line

Good news is there was an orchid growing up against the fence not seen here before. Seen lots of other types in the patch. First find this season - fairy fingers orchid - caladenia alata

Lots of these in the grassy section - previous years the grass has been cut back early. Price is paid - no microtis orchids showing

Did find one sun orchid budding - last season there was a lot

A cluster of oxalis

Sun orchid flowering - thelymitra ixioides

Budding sun orchid - only one - lots previously

First of the burchardia umbrellata flowering

Sundew flower

Found one sun orchid along the fence flowering

Thelymitra ixioides - spotted sun orchid without spots

A bit early but there it is - Christmas Bells

A few track shots - grey spider grevillea

Hakea flower

Do know of some greenhood colonies close to the start of the trail. Blunt-tipped greenhood has been wiped out. The other has been damaged by weed killer but there are survivors. How do I know? Grass is burned brown

There are survivors - this is an ID challenge between pterostylis erecta and oblonga - leaning to oblonga - the set of the labellum

And the flatter top of the helmet
Did not walk onto the closed zones. Got in the car to walk a piece of Lovers Jump Creek from Samuel King fire trail

Blow me down. Ku-ring Gai Council has also closed the track for a hazard reduction burn. No sign of that - did choose not to walk. Have a 3 orchid walk in place. Got enough steps. Bothers me that between the NP and the council, they choose to close the only two bush walks open to walkers in the suburb on the same day. Co-ordination problem? Nah!!!! Shit scared they cannot contain a reduction burn..
Got a 3 orchid day. Got a quiet walking day. Nobody died in a bushfire
Wife was late from work. Stir-fried rice for dinner - her request
Tomorrow is forecast to be very hot. My friend posted a photo of an orchid flowering that I found budding last week. Come hell or high water I want a photo - never mind the hazard reduction burns
