St Brigids Marrickville funeral scenes : October 20 2026

Got a different day lined up. Heading into Marrickville which I visited not long ago - not headphones this time but a funeral. Funeral for Don Loghry who was my wife's boss and mentor at Commonwealth Bank

I lit a candle for my sister-in-law, Dawn who died Sunday unexpectedly. Press a button and the candle comes alight.

Interesting church built in 1921 in Spanish Mission style with lots of classical touches like the statues and the column tops. Service was very traditional - a few good messages from Father Michael and a good talk by Don's son

Last farewells on a blue sky day. Was a big turnout with maybe 400 people - bank colleagues, rugby club members, swimming club members, golfers and family. I only met Don a few times - he was a man who gave a lot to his communities

One of the old houses on the way down to Marrickville Tennis Club for the wake - had one drink, reminisced and had some pizza for lunch

A lot of old Italian style houses on our walk back to the car. A few had nice flowers - this one has two-tone amaryllis lilies and a few different tones on crown of thorns flowers

Got to say the funeral was tough. It is always sobering to see what impact people have had in their lives. Don lived all his life in and around this city and State. I can imagine the funeral for my sister-in-law will be the same. She lived in Johannesburg all her life - she taught at local schools for years. All local. My story is very different - all across the world.

Felt the need to go walking when we got home. Did not walk far but was good to not think for a while

Cooked pasta for dinner - forgot the chicken stock. Would have failed the cooking show test - more seasoning. Can safely say it was a feat to get anything out - brain is in a bundle of emotions..
