October is the month I ride for Kids Cancer. My Super Hero jersey arrived this morning awarded for raising over $2500 in the year. Always proud to wear one for the kids and for my sponsors
Took the train to do a ride from Berowra to look for flying duck orchids
Was intercepted by a young lady as I left the station. She insisted on photo of her and her brother. Why? The plaque commemorates Foster's Store which was on the site of the station car park. Their grandfather is the man sitting on the horse. Her brother gave me an idea for a walk I have not done. His words "will not have had an idea from a smarter man, today". We will see
Did my normal walk on Turner Fire Trail - white kunzea to start
A bunch of dipodium orchids with tops chomped off. I know the spot and am guessing these are the ones picked by walkers last year. Of note - no new spikes
View across the Hawkesbury River
Feels like a dipodium budding discovery walk
And this is why I keep coming back as each walk tells me what is incoming - maybe two weeks time
And other things to enjoy - a lot of dampiera purpurea
A few slender rice flowers ending their season
One dipodium spike against the backdrop of a scribbly gum
Starburst flower - my name
Heard loud music on a boombox. This lady stormed past with music on high. Rude way to spoil the peace
Budding hyacinth orchid
And just where I expected there was a flying duck orchid right on the edge of the Great North Walk
A bit further up were two folded up. Maybe disturbed by the lady flailing her walking sticks OR closing up for the year
Best photo I could muster with a background. Colours were quite muted
Kept on walking - narrow leafed hemigenia
Purple kunzea
Red spider grevillea
First purple fan flower for the season
Signs of orchids past - probably a sun orchid
Found a flying duck orchid on the way back with better colouring
Caleana major
Drumsticks flower ending
This flower has me confused. Looks like a sundew flower but the plant does not match. iNat says ziera
Hibbertia I know
Seeded sun orchid
Promise of something new not far from the bike park - maybe a sun orchid
Took the Foster advice to walk the track from Astron Drive. Walk over the rocks and follow the path for a km under thr cliff
St Andrews Cross spider
View across Hawkesbury River
Grey spider grevillea
Berowra Waters below
View down the river
Leptospermum squarrosum with a view
Pea flower on the way back
Did find one orchid. Foster kid was wrong about orchids
Did check one more spot for rock orchids - no luck there
Reason for two panniers- pick up two slabs from photo office
Ride done
