In English

Greetings to the @womentribe community. I’m joining the initiative launched by our dear @syllem in her ‘Inspiring Words’ column, which invites us to reflect on the theme: ‘Silence as an enigma’, where she points out that we humans are drawn to the unknown, and the more details we give about who we are and what we do, the less interesting we become. Just as the overexposure we experience today leaves us emotionally vulnerable—we seek validation, depend on the opinions of others and leave nothing to the imagination—here is my contribution:

I believe it is not necessary to continue living our lives according to how others see us; we must open our eyes and break free from that habit, as a first step towards true freedom, since my life belongs to me, not to others, which is why we sometimes make the mistake of sharing our plans with others.

A sort of trap

If my life belongs entirely to me, I would be setting myself a sort of trap by living my life trying to meet other people’s expectations, and this only fills me with frustration. It’s lovely to see eye to eye with others, but the problem lies in confusing that with living for the sake of others.

So the mistake of revealing our plans too soon often brings negative consequences; this happens because, when we talk about our goals, our mind makes us feel as though we have already achieved them, which reduces our real motivation to get to work on them and, at the same time, drains our energy.

When I talk about a project full of hope, I may be exposing myself to the doubts, fears or destructive criticism of others, which can damage my great idea before it has even taken root.

The Law of Silence

For example, I’ve found that when I tell someone about a purchase I’m planning to make, something happens – it usually falls through and doesn’t come to fruition. However, when I apply the Law of Silence and choose not to tell anyone about my next purchase until I’ve actually got the item at home, this helps me keep my motivation to buy it a secret.

It really is a very common and frustrating feeling – the sense that if I talk about my plans, they fall through. Many people put it down to bad energy or envy. When I set about investigating this, I found that psychology explains it in terms of premature gratification: my brain receives the social reward of having achieved it before I’ve actually done so, and consequently loses motivation.

This means that whilst we cannot control what others say, we can control the power we give them over our decisions. As a practical guide to protecting my mental space and my projects, this is where the rule of selective confidentiality comes into play, because not everyone has the maturity or empathy to respect my dreams.

The problem with living in the public eye

It’s also important to distinguish between people who are critical or pessimistic and those who genuinely inspire me. And the truth is, I just need to get used to talking about my projects only once they’ve become a tangible reality.

When I choose to work in silence, I let the results speak for me; thus, the most important approval I need is my own, and I achieve this by setting boundaries with regard to other people’s opinions, seeking to protect a particular plan or project, as the most important step is learning to filter what I let into my mind.

The problem with living in the public eye is that we stop moving towards where we really want to go, perhaps out of fear of what people might say, or of rejection, or of public approval – even more so in this age of social media and contemporary culture, where privacy has become a need for applause; as our friend @syllem points out, we depend on the opinions of others and leave nothing to the imagination.

Threats that aren’t real

In any case, that feeling of being so exposed can cause me stress, and it isn’t what’s happening outside, but what’s happening inside me; I believe it’s the way I interpret the situations I find myself in that causes me to waste energy defending myself against threats that aren’t real.

One example is trying as much as possible to avoid complaining and thinking that everything in life has a solution, except death; realising that we’re always seeking approval for what we do and say, when in reality what matters most is the opinion we have of ourselves.

There are always things we haven’t learnt, but it’s never too late to take steps to improve, to seek solutions, to educate ourselves, whilst always remembering what a valuable person I am – that God made me to be happy, to succeed and to live a life of peace, serenity and tranquillity, surrounded by the love of those I love.

I firmly believe, with my faith in God, that I have the capacity to love others and to listen to those who offer constructive criticism, without neglecting my dreams and interests, whilst remembering that if I focus on what I want, I can achieve it, discovering my potential and my virtues so that I can, if possible, put them at the service of others.
