Greetings, fellow food lovers! Welcome back to my blog. This time, I’d like to share with you a very special experience full of “firsts” for me.
Those of you who know me know that I’m pretty traditional when it comes to food—both what I cook at home and what I like to enjoy at restaurants—but this past weekend I decided to step out of my comfort zone and venture out to try Japanese food for the first time.
Taking advantage of an invitation from my sister, who was in town, we went. It’s a place we both knew by a different name, and while it still retains much of its original decor, it’s now been renovated with a Japanese theme.
The place she chose was Wakame Sushi Bar, a must-visit and very popular spot here in the city of San Cristóbal, located right in the heart of the Barrio Obrero neighborhood.
Come along with me, and I’ll share my honest experience trying the sushi. Upon entering Wakame, the first thing that stands out is the cozy decor. It offers two dining areas: an outdoor one to enjoy the city’s weather and an air-conditioned indoor one. We settled into a table inside.
It has that relaxed vibe perfect for sharing a meal with family and enjoying a pleasant moment. The soft lighting and Asian-inspired details give it a very modern touch.
I have to admit that when I saw the menu, it struck me as innovative—you scan a QR code, and that mouthwatering menu pops up on your phone. At first, I was a little intimidated; with so many terms like tempura, nori, wasabi, and the names of all the rolls, I didn’t know where to start.
Fortunately, the staff was patient and explained each dish to us very clearly. My instinct led me to some delicious rolls with tuna and breaded shrimp; this delight called “Fuji” was what I ordered to get started in this addictive world of sushi.
What a pleasant surprise! I had this preconceived notion that raw fish would taste strange, but the combination of these ingredients with the house sauces makes every bite a feast of textures.
I tried their soy sauce out of curiosity, and it’s definitely an explosion of flavors.
The portions are quite generous, and the presentation of the dishes on the platter is very aesthetically pleasing. I paired my meal with a natural, unsweetened passion fruit juice made with fresh fruit.
I loved watching my little one use chopsticks to pick up her roll. After eating, I went to explore the place and take some photos. I loved everything.
My verdict on this place in terms of food and flavor is 10/10. It completely exceeded my expectations for my first time eating sushi.
Wakame Sushi Bar definitely cured my fear of Japanese food, and now I understand why it’s always so highly recommended in the city.
I can’t wait to go back to try another dish and enjoy the sushi. Thanks for joining me on this tour. See you next time. Bye!
Chao!
