What is it?
Dungeon Crawler Carl is a 'lit-rpg' book series that came out in 2020 and 8 out of the 10 planned books are already released.
Lit-RPG = Literature RPG. Which basically means a RPG game but in book format. Think of it as watching a video game tv series written down in word format. You follow the characters as they level up, collect loot, gain skills and spells.
Carl is the main character and he enters the dungeon with his ex-girlfriend's cat (Princess Donut).
Back It Up
The Dungeon Crawler Carl book series is based around Earth and Aliens coming to collect the resources from this planet after a long enough time has passed. But what these aliens do is allow all humans who were... outside at a specific time.. to enter the Dungeon and fight through 18 Floors of increasingly crazyness for a chance to earn there freedom.
Carl and Donut enter the dungeon together and very quickly Donut gains the ability to speak and interact which adds a level of craziness that me writing about will never do it justice.
Power Creep?
I am a millenial who grew up watching anime and playing video games. I used to watch Dragon Ball Z every day after school and still do love it but it got to the point where the 'Power Creep' was just stupid crazy. Your hero has to get stronger to fight this new enemy, but then the next enemy has to be stronger yet and soon you get to the point where the main hero is literally a 'god' and it is almost just stupid at that point.
Dungeon Crawler Carl doesn't do that. The author Matt has done a phenominal job of keeping the power creep in check. Carl and team do continue to get stronger and stronger but because there are 18 floors, and each floor has different themes... getting strong enough to defeat say Undead Zombies on 1 floor, doesn't mean you are going to be untouchable on the next floor who spit flaming lava at you.
You Won't Regret It
Nobody that I have convinced to read the book series has said they don't like it. Reading it keeps you on your toes the entire time and its not predictable at all. But it also isn't stupid where the main characters just punch their way through things. They have to use everything at their disposal to just survive.
