That's tough! I have a place where I used to work and it was very special to me. Then I went back five or ten years later and it just didn't have that same magic that it used to. It wasn't in disrepair or anything, but time definitely changes things.
What a beautiful story accompanied by great photos... That's how nostalgia works... We remember the place, we remember our childhood, and we LOCK those two things in one specific moment in the past... Many years later, we would like to bring back those feelings, that sensation, but it's impossible to do it... Not just because those are things from the past, but also, we are not the same person anymore than we were, and we don't have those years we had... 😃
It happens to me every year when I travel to my hometown, to visit my parents... The landscape is almost the same, but the feeling isn't... But, as you said, those memories continue to live in our hearts, which is priceless!

I completely understand this; it's happened to me, and it's so sad to see places that were so vibrant in my youth, and now seem like insignificant, abandoned spots. It makes me very sad when I see things like this. I think the sense of belonging is changing more and more with each new generation.
